About us
Transport is at the heart of our communities. It connects people to jobs, education, public services, shops, leisure activities, and with other people. It’s key to moving goods to where they are needed. Our vision is for all communities to have access to high quality, sustainable transport that meets their needs, improves quality of life and protects the environment.

Summer breaks are #BetterByRail! Taking the train not only shrinks your carbon footprint, it can also get you there more quickly, save you the hassle of airport security and leave you more spending money in your pocket this summer. Check out the report: https://lnkd.in/eph8d8g2
Whether you're visiting St Paul's Cathedral, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, or the Northern Quarter, choose rail travel over air when travelling domestically this summer. Although airfares might appear cheaper, hidden costs such as baggage fees, seat selection, and airport transfers can significantly increase the overall expense. Additionally, air travel requires extra time for security, boarding, and transfers, often adding hours to the journey. In comparison, trains are frequently more time-efficient for many routes, offering greater service frequency and flexibility. https://lnkd.in/euubBuys Click the image to find out more ➡️ #NetZero #SustainableTravel #TrainTravel

We signed this letter, along with CoMoUK and more than 50 organisations. Trials of shared e-scooters have been popular, enabling almost 50 million clean, green journeys to be made. Now we are calling on the Government to create a new 'low powered zero emission vehicle' class, to give e-scooters legal status.
The new transport secretary, Louise Haigh, has told her department that she wants to ‘move fast and fix things’. In open letter CoMoUK and the signatories say, a new legal status is the only way to resolve the problems caused by “entirely unregulated” privately-owned e-scooters being ridden on public roads. By clearing up the ongoing uncertainty around their status on the UK’s roads, ministers can give this cheap, flexible and green mode of transport a long-term future. https://lnkd.in/gr6ZSkyN

Our ambassador Norman Baker has written this column in his personal capacity, but we agree with his calls for: - Public transport to be properly funded - Domestic flights to be curbed and private jets taxed more - Rail freight to be supported - Motoring tax reform #PayAsYouDrive

Our post has been transported by rail for almost 200 years, but from October Royal Mail will no longer have its own fleet of mail trains. The decision to scrap its remaining fleet is deeply concerning. It undermines the huge economic and environmental benefits of rail freight and could ultimately result in many more lorries congesting our roads and polluting our air. We are calling on the Government, Royal Mail and the rail freight industry to work together to find a solution. Find out about what we're doing to help ensure that in future more mail is transported by rail by clicking on the link below.

For too long, new homes have been built without proper access to public transport networks, forcing people into expensive car ownership and making communities car dependent. The announcement today by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner that the Government intends to reform the planning system is long overdue. Now we must ensure that any reforms place public transport at the heart of new developments and that revised planning guidance contains a duty to locate all future developments near existing or planned public transport networks to reduce the need for cars wherever possible. Last week, we wrote to Angela Rayner to urge her to do just this. Read the letter here: https://ow.ly/92I350SNnjt

We were very pleased to attend last night's launch of FirstGroup plc's new report 'Generation Rail' at the London Transport Museum. The report examines how to get more young people onto trains. Amongst its recommendations are more affordable fares for 16-25 year olds and protection for late night services, things we fully support.
