This National Inclusion Week we're celebrating the wonderful efforts of our Wild Spaces Project Officers who are working to create inclusive green spaces for people across the UK, starting with Alice Kenny 🌱🙌 Alice has been working with groups in Stirling and Perth to help connect people with butterflies and moths through butterfly walks, ID sessions and moth mornings, as well as supporting communities to create Wild Spaces: “During the project we have worked with wellbeing and mental health support groups, taken part in activities as part of the Scottish Refugee festival, joined intergenerational groups, and spent time in community hubs. The running joke during this project has been that I turn up for the cake, but meeting people in spaces they feel comfortable in has really helped us introduce people to nature." We are a leading wildlife charity working across the UK to conserve butterflies, moths and our environment.
About us
Butterfly Conservation is a leading charity and the world’s largest organisation dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and moths. Our mission is to halt and then reverse the decline of butterflies and moths. By achieving this goal we can help create a healthier environment in which we all can live. Butterflies and moths are a vital part of our wildlife heritage and they are valuable indicators of the health of our environment. Our surveys reveal that they continue to decline at a rate that is faster than most other well-documented groups of plants and animals. Our work will benefit other wildlife and the ecosystems upon which all life depends. Butterfly Conservation’s research advises people how to conserve and restore habitats. We run programmes for more than 100 threatened species and are involved in conserving hundreds of sites and reserves. To find out more about our work and how you can get involved or become a member please visit www.butterfly-conservation.org.

Over 20,000 nature lovers are speaking up for butterflies and moths! 🦋📢 We’re fighting for butterflies and moths to get the protections needed to stop declines by asking the Government to declare a Nature Emergency and, as a first point of action, to ban butterfly-killing neonicotinoid pesticides. We can’t do this without you. Help us reach our next milestone of 40,000 signatures by adding your voice today 👇 https://lnkd.in/g39GFih9 #ButterflyEmergency

Wondering where all the butterflies have gone? You're not alone. In 2024, we've seen butterfly numbers fall across the UK. This year’s wet spring and low summer temperatures will have had an impact, but this is part of a longer-term trend: 80% of butterfly species in the UK have declined since the 1970s. Years of habitat destruction, climate breakdown and pesticide use have taken their toll. If we are to restore nature and save our butterflies and moths we must act now. 📢 Sign our letter to show your support and demand that the Government declares a nature emergency, before it’s too late 👉 https://lnkd.in/g39GFih9 #ButterflyEmergency

A HUGE thank you to the 12,000 of you who have already added your voice to our open letter 💚🦋 We are still fighting for butterflies and moths to get the protections needed by the Government to stop declines. We won’t stop until a Nature Emergency has been declared. Help us reach 20,000 signatures by sharing with friends and family and making so much noise for butterflies that we can’t be ignored 👉 https://lnkd.in/g39GFih9 #ButterflyEmergency

More than 85,000 citizen scientists took part in our #BigButterflyCount this year, submitting 143,241 Counts! This is equivalent to 35,810 hours, or four years worth of time spent counting, in gardens, parks, school grounds and the countryside. 📆 While the Gatekeeper took the top spot with 190,413 records, the overall results reveal a worrying picture for the majority of our butterfly species 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFgKaexg #ButterflyEmergency

This year’s #BigButterflyCount results are in and it’s not good news for nature 📰🦋 Overall, participants who took part from the 12 July - 4 August spotted just seven butterflies on average per 15-minute Count, a reduction of almost 50% on last year’s average of 12, and the lowest in the 14-year history of the Big Butterfly Count. 📉 Common Blue, Holly Blue, Green-veined White, Small White, Small Tortoiseshell, Painted Lady and Scotch Argus all had their worst year on record, and no species had their best. Following record low results we are declaring a Butterfly Emergency and demanding the government take urgent action. 🚨 See the full results and sign our open letter today 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFgKaexg 📷: Will Langdon

We are in a Butterfly Emergency 🚨🦋 This year’s Big Butterfly Count saw the lowest number of butterflies spotted per Count in its 14-year history. With 80% of butterflies having declined since the 1970s, they have been sounding the alarm for a nature crisis for some time. 📉 Join us as we demand the Government take urgent action to save butterflies and moths. 📢 Sign our open letter today 👉 https://lnkd.in/g39GFih9 #ButterflyEmergency

Meet our 'Wonder of the Day', the Merveille du Jour (Dichonia aprilina)! 🤩 One of the moths to look out for this month, the pale green colouring and black markings allow it to blend in perfectly with lichens and mosses. The adults feed at ivy flowers and overripe berries, while the caterpillars feed on the leaves and immature flowers of oak trees. 🐛 📸: Iain Leach, Joe Myers, Savannah Jones #MothsMatter #MothMonday
