  • B&M UK delivered growth of 6% in the quarter to 28 September. This is a sharp uplift on the 1.5% growth in the previous quarter, and suggests an improving trend for consumers' disposable income. Growth is still driven by new stores, with 39 opened in the half year, including 30 in the UK. Like for like growth (same stores) decreased by -1.9% in the last quarter up from -5.1% in the previous 13 weeks. Group Revenues rose by 3.7% to £2,644m (+3.9% at constant currency), driven by volume growth. New Stores: 39 new stores were opened across the Group in the first half, including 30 in the UK, 5 in France, and 4 in Heron Foods. Read more from the link in the comments...

  • In sad news for the DIY sector, BHETA has learned that Homebase has appointed Teneo as administrators following an £84.2 million loss last year. Teneo, upon their appointment, promptly facilitated the sale of up to 70 Homebase stores across the UK, along with the brand and intellectual property, to CDS (Superstores International), which operates under The Range and Wilko brands. This sale is set to transfer up to 1,600 team members to CDS. Meanwhile, the remaining 49 UK stores and all Republic of Ireland locations will remain open as discussions continue with potential buyers. Hilco Capital, which acquired Homebase for £1 in 2018, had previously explored cost-cutting measures in response to cautious consumer spending. Will Jones, BHETA Chief Operating Officer said: “This is a very sad day for the DIY sector as a long established industry heavyweight brand files for administration. The retail sector has been challenging for a number of years, and we know that the team at Homebase explored every option to support the future of the business. The team running BHETA’s Credit Forum will endeavor to help and advise any suppliers caught up in this challenging situation.”

  • Will Jones, our BHETA COO, was speaking this morning at the ‘Unlocking the EU Market’ conference held by the Department for Business and Trade in Abingdon as part of International Trade Week 2024 (#ITW). In the morning, various speakers presented including Lucy Haine (pictured) who talked all about the export opportunities through Marketplaces. From inspiring presentations to hands-on roundtable discussions, the day was full of insights from Export Champions and EU specialists: including regulatory hurdles, logistics solutions and sector-specific opportunities. The afternoon featured collaborative roundtable sessions, involving specialists, business trade advisers, and exporters to solve challenges together.   • Kingfisher has today announced new science-based emissions reduction targets as part of their Net Zero Climate Plan: by 2030, Kingfisher is aiming to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 68% and Scope 3 emissions by 46%. Suppliers need to take note. "Scope 3" includes all the products that Kingfisher sells, both own brand and brand, and 2030 is only five years away. To continue supplying the retailers in our sector, like Kingfisher, who are announcing plans for significant carbon reduction, suppliers need to start their own carbon measurement and reduction plans. BHETA can help with advice and point you towards our business support providers. Kingfisher is also aiming to reach Net Zero across its own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2040, and across the lifecycle of the products it sells (Scope 3) by 2050. #carbonreduction #clarity #workingtogether

    Today we're announcing our new science-based emissions reduction targets, as part of the next stage of our Net Zero Climate Plan.    We're aiming to reach Net Zero across our own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2040, and across the lifecycle of our products (Scope 3) by 2050.   By 2030 we're also aiming to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 68% and Scope 3 emissions by 46%, building on our strong progress to date.     So how are we going to get there?
