The largest independent funder of research into heart and circulatory diseases in the UK

About us

We are the British Heart Foundation. Our vision is a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. We raise money to research cures and treatments for the world’s biggest killers. We fund around £100 million of research each year into all heart and circulatory diseases and the things that cause them. Heart diseases. Stroke. Vascular dementia. Diabetes. They're all connected, and they're all under our microscope. We also help millions of people every year with our up to date information about heart and circulatory diseases so the UK public are better informed. We work hard to protect heart health and fight for better services for heart patients - communicating with politicians, government officials, workplaces and schools.

Join us 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐚𝐭 𝟒𝐩𝐦 for a special Live and Ticking webinar with Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s one you don’t want to miss! We’ll be joined by BHF-funded researcher Laura Booth at the University of Newcastle who’ll discuss how some anti-cancer drugs can cause heart cells to not function correctly and produce substances that “zombify” other cells, causing heart dysfunction. We'll also be joined by Philippa Coffey who will talk about being diagnosed with lymphoma in 2015 and experiencing several side effects after completing eight courses of aggressive chemotherapy, including heart failure. Macmillan Cancer Support Clinical Advisor and Specialist Reviewer, Dr María Sol Andrés, a cardiologist specialising in echocardiography and cardio-oncology at Royal Brompton Hospital, will discuss how cancer and heart disease can interlink and will be on hand to answer your questions. And Priya Reehal, lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in cardio-oncology and heart failure at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals will also offer advice and support, as well as answering your questions and queries. To understand more about cancer and the heart, and the research we’re doing to prevent this side effect, sign up for free now: bhf.org.uk/liventicking

To mark one year since his lifesaving open-heart surgery, former professional footballer Fraser Franks is taking on his first half marathon, the AJ Bell Great North Run, to raise funds for our lifesaving research. Fraser's biggest supporter, his 5-year-old daughter Nellie, will also be taking on her own challenge for her 'hero' Dad, running the AJ Bell Mini Great North Run with him the day before. Fraser, who started his football career with Chelsea at just 8 years old, had to retire early at the age of 28 due to a rare congenital heart condition called unicuspid aortic valve. In September 2023 at age 32, Fraser had major open-heart surgery and a mechanical valve inserted to improve his quality of life and ensure his heart was working properly. Now a proud BHF ambassador, Fraser spoke of what it means to him to be taking part in this year's run, “I’m so grateful to the BHF for all of the incredible research they fund into new cures and treatments into conditions like mine, and all the lives they’ve saved. Their funding of research is why parents like me get to see their children grow up, like I will get to watch Nellie. I’m doing this run to give back.” Over the coming weeks we will be sharing more on Fraser's story and training for the AJ Bell Great North Run. Join us in wishing Fraser and Nellie the best of luck in their challenge!❤️ Donate to Fraser and Nellie's fundraising page now: https://lnkd.in/ehA4Sp5Y

David and Maureen have been married for 55 years and have found joy in volunteering together at their local British Heart Foundation shop in Sutton Coldfield. ❤️ Maureen, who has been volunteering with us for the last 12 years, said: “The social atmosphere in the shop recreates the office environment I was used to before I retired.” When the store was in need of a volunteer driver, Maureen knew just the right person, and her husband David joined the team. “There’s always such a buzz and every day is different,” David said. “You never know who you will meet.” Feeling inspired to volunteer at your local BHF store? Whether you want to try out volunteering on your own, or bring your partner, friends or family along – we’ll welcome any new faces who have an hour or two to spare this summer. Today, we are celebrating the incredible Joan Willett on her 108th Birthday! Joan won our hearts after walking more than 17 miles up and down a hill outside her care home during the pandemic – raising an incredible £60,000 to help fund our lifesaving research. In 2023, Joan's inspiring fundraising efforts was recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List, and she received a British Empire Medal, awarded for meritorious civil service worthy of recognition by the crown. From all of us at the BHF, we want to wish Joan a very Happy 108th Birthday and thank her again for her incredible fundraising efforts! ❤️

This is Joseph. Joseph Burns, a 23-year-old from North Belfast, was an electrician and popular barman at The Chester Bar. He loved fitness and playing 5-a-side football. On 14th July 2014, 10 years ago this Sunday, Joseph collapsed at his parents’ home and sadly passed away. His sudden death left his family in shock and confusion. For months, they had no answers. The turning point came when Joseph’s family was referred to the inherited heart conditions clinic in Belfast. Genetic testing revealed that Joseph’s mother, Una, and sister, Jeanette, both carry a gene change associated with Long QT syndrome (LQTS), an inherited condition that can cause dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. It is very likely that this condition led to Joseph’s untimely death. “It’s very hard to hear that you have a change in your genes that can cause potentially dangerous heart rhythms but thanks to the testing, we now know we have this gene change, and it can be monitored,” says Jeanette. With your support, we can fund more lifesaving research to keep hearts beating stronger and families together for longer: https://lnkd.in/gzFEc6Zk
