Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer globally, and its incidence is on the rise. It primarily affects sun-exposed areas of the body such as the head and neck. Risk factors include UV exposure from the sun and tanning beds, with higher prevalence among white populations and older adults. 📝 Recognise symptoms: The appearance of SCC can vary, but it's often characterised by thick, scaly patches. These lesions may ulcerate and develop raised edges. Early detection is vital to preventing its spread, especially in high-risk patients. 🛠️ Treatment options: Treatment depends on factors such as lesion size, location, and patient health. Options range from surgical excision, which remains the gold standard, to Mohs surgery for high-risk cases where tissue conservation is essential. Other approaches like cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, and radiotherapy may be appropriate in specific circumstances. 📊 NMC proficiencies: Nurses play a critical role in identifying and managing SCC. According to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) proficiencies, registered nurses should be able to use evidence-based approaches to take a thorough history and assess people’s needs, and perform whole body systems assessments, including the skin, to detect potential abnormalities. By staying informed and proactive in educating patients, nurses can help prevent SCC, improve early diagnosis, and ensure effective treatment. Read the full article to learn more.
