Gruta do Caldeirão es un yacimiento arqueológico en cueva situado en Tomar (Portugal, oeste de la... more Gruta do Caldeirão es un yacimiento arqueológico en cueva situado en Tomar (Portugal, oeste de la península Ibérica), que contiene una importante secuencia perteneciente al Pleistoceno superior, adscrita culturalmente al Paleolítico medio (Musteriense) y Paleolítico superior (Solutrense-Magdaleniense), que incluye industria lítica, restos humanos y restos de grandes y pequeños vertebrados. La revisión e interpretación de la asociación de roedores de la secuencia, previamente publicada en los años 90 del siglo pasado, nos ha permitido remarcar tres importantes conclusiones: 1) la única especie del subgénero Iberomys presente en la secuencia es la especie endémica actual de topillo Microtus (Iberomys) cabrerae (topillo de Cabrera); 2) la asociación de roedores está dominada en toda la secuencia por especies relacionadas con bosques abiertos, como el ratón de campo (Apodemus sylvaticus) y especies relacionadas con espacios abiertos-húmedos como los topillos mediterráneo y lusitánico (...

The aim of this work is to describe the taphonomic signatures of the Aroeira 3 cranium, with a sp... more The aim of this work is to describe the taphonomic signatures of the Aroeira 3 cranium, with a specific focus on cranial breakage, comparing the cranium with other Middle and Upper Pleistocene hominin fossils in order to approximate the cause of death and the biological agencies and geologic processes involved in the taphonomic record of this specimen. Aroeira-3 was recovered from Acheulean layer X of Gruta da Aroeira (Portugal), dated to 390-436 ka. Taphonomic analyses noted surface modifications employing standard methods. The cranial breakage pattern of Aroeira 3 was analyzed to assess the presence/absence of perimortem (fresh bone) and postmortem (dry bone) fractures and the possible causes of perimortem skull bone fractures. Aroeira 3 presents substantial bone loss of the left supraorbital arch and the outer cranial table of the frontal squama. Most of the fractures present features consistent with postmortem injuries. The late persistence in Southern Iberia of a Neandertal-associated Middle Paleolithic is supporte... more The late persistence in Southern Iberia of a Neandertal-associated Middle Paleolithic is supported by the archeological stratigraphy and the radiocarbon and luminescence dating of three newly excavated localities in the Mula basin of Murcia (Spain). At Cueva Antón, Mousterian layer I-k can be no more than 37,100 years-old. At La Boja, the basal Aurignacian can be no less than 36,500 years-old. The regional Middle-to-Upper Paleolithic transition process is thereby bounded to the first half of the 37th millennium Before Present, in agreement with evidence from Andalusia, Gibraltar and Portugal. This chronology represents a lag of minimally 3000 years with the rest of Europe, where that transition and the associated process of Neandertal/modern human admixture took place between 40,000 and 42,000 years ago. Bell Beaker pottery spread across western and central Europe beginning around 2750 BCE before dis... more Bell Beaker pottery spread across western and central Europe beginning around 2750 BCE before disappearing between 2200-1800 BCE. The mechanism of its expansion is a topic of long-standing debate, with support for both cultural diffusion and human migration. We present new genome-wide ancient DNA data from 170 Neolithic, Copper Age and Bronze Age Europeans, including 100 Beaker-associated individuals. In contrast to the Corded Ware Complex, which has previously been identified as arriving in central Europe following migration from the east, we observe limited genetic affinity between Iberian and central European Beaker Complex-associated individuals, and thus exclude migration as a significant mechanism of spread between these two regions. While most researchers now agree that the ancestry of all present day humans can be traced back to African late Middle Pleistocene populations, at a time when the remainder of Eurasia was inhabited by ‘archaic humans’, most notably the Neandertals, issues that remain to be resolved are the tempo and mode of early modern human dispersal and interaction with archaic humans.This paper focuses on what happened at the time of contact in Europe, and assesses the level of admixture that may have occurred, as well as the extent to which such level may have varied in both time and space. It explains how the available mtDNA evidence does not preclude admixture at the time of contact, and is in fact consistent, depending on a number of parameters, with a possibly substantial Neandertal contribution to the initial modern human population of Europe.
