Sci-fi drama Dark Matter has been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+, less than two months after the release of its Season 1 finale.
“Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for Season 1 — book fans and new fans — and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago — you were so good to us,” author/showrunner Blake Crouch said in a statement. “In the process of writing and filming Season 1, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!”
Added Tolmach: “Making Dark Matter was a longtime dream, and I’m so proud to see Blake’s vision come to life and to connect with so many people. Seeing the Dessens’ journey resonate with audiences has been extremely gratifying, and we can’t wait to bring more of this world — and others — to life in Season 2. Huge thanks to Apple TV+, Sony and our amazing cast and crew. Here we go!”
Dark Matter is an adaptation of Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name. Edgerton plays Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man in Chicago who gets kidnapped one night and wakes up in an alternate version of his life. As the story progresses, per the official logline, “he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”
Rounding out the cast are Jennifer Connelly (Snowpiercer) as Jason’s wife Daniela, Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Amanda Lucas, Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) as Ryan Holder, Dayo Okeniyi (Shades of Blue) as Leighton Vance, and Oakes Fegley (Person of Interest) as Jason and Daniela’s son Charlie.
TVLine readers gave the June 26 finale an average grade of “B+,” while Season 1 earned an overall grade of “A-.” In announcing the renewal, Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss promised that Season 2 will “captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse.”

As long as Crouch stays on as Showrunner I have faith it’ll be good.
Appreciate that Apple Tv really cares about its series and renews them. They are building a solid library of shows. Most streamers cancel everything so fast, but I like that Apple lets shows have a full life.
I liked it but not sure about another season. Wasn’t the story wrapped up? Did they tell the entire story of the novel?
Had the same thoughts.
Didn’t think there was anything left to tell, but at least the renewal comes with the same showrunner/writer at the helm. At minimum it doesn’t feel like Apple milking a longer run just for the sake of more product, but it does run the risk of just a tedious exploration of the characters throughout their multiverse. At its best, the first season was more than just that.
There were a few threads left open.
We don’t know which world the core family will be entering. It could be the world where Amanda is, but maybe not. Since Charlie seems to have selected the world, it is theoretically (according to the conceit of the show) a world where he already exists or formerly exists. How will the family orient themselves to the new world they have chosen? In particular, how will the family navigate possibly encountering their alternate versions?
Amanda herself seems to be on the same world with original Ryan, who may be trying to develop his own compound for returning to our world. Not clear what will happen with the two of them, or if they will end up contacting the original core family again.
Not clear what will happen to all those Jasons just hanging around on Earth-1 when our core family left. And how does bad-Jason fit in with all this? Does he continue to live Jason-1’s life, even with Daniela and Charlie now gone? Will he be held accountable for his crimes?
There are still two Leightons on unknown worlds, so it’s not clear what happens with them. There’s also an alternate-Blair out and about.
I think there is enough that they can at least scrape out 6 or 8 episodes of a second season.
Unfortunately they renewed the wrong Dark Matter…
I read the book twice and appreciated where they took the story in the show. It’s gonna be interesting to see where they take the story with no more source material to draw on.
.
It’s a bit like Sliders…an infinite number of Earths to explore and versions of Jason and family. Let’s really go for it!!!
That’s what I like about Apple TV: I can safely start a show knowing they won’t cancel the story mid way. I’m thankful for this renewal
I would rather take a new season of Counterpart.
Second that! Counterpart was a much smarter, better acted and more insightful series that Dark Matter can ever hope to be.
