'Dark Matter' Season 2 Renewed at Apple TV Plus
Apple TV+

Sci-fi drama Dark Matter has been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+, less than two months after the release of its Season 1 finale.

“Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for Season 1 — book fans and new fans — and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago — you were so good to us,” author/showrunner Blake Crouch said in a statement. “In the process of writing and filming Season 1, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!”

Added Tolmach: “Making Dark Matter was a longtime dream, and I’m so proud to see Blake’s vision come to life and to connect with so many people. Seeing the Dessens’ journey resonate with audiences has been extremely gratifying, and we can’t wait to bring more of this world — and others — to life in Season 2. Huge thanks to Apple TV+, Sony and our amazing cast and crew. Here we go!”

Dark Matter is an adaptation of Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name. Edgerton plays Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man in Chicago who gets kidnapped one night and wakes up in an alternate version of his life. As the story progresses, per the official logline, “he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”

Rounding out the cast are Jennifer Connelly (Snowpiercer) as Jason’s wife Daniela, Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Amanda Lucas, Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) as Ryan Holder, Dayo Okeniyi (Shades of Blue) as Leighton Vance, and Oakes Fegley (Person of Interest) as Jason and Daniela’s son Charlie.

TVLine readers gave the June 26 finale an average grade of “B+,” while Season 1 earned an overall grade of “A-.” In announcing the renewal, Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss promised that Season 2 will “captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse.”
