When it came time to cast Chicago Med‘s new doctor, there was no doubt that Blindspot and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. vet Luke Mitchell was the man for the job.
“He gave a great audition, and he’s great looking, and he’s charming, and he’s a wonderful actor. Need we say more?” co-showrunner Andrew Schneider tells TVLine.
Mitchell joins the NBC drama in this Wednesday’s Season 9 premiere (airing at 8/7c) as Mitch Ripley, an Emergency Department doc who shares a complicated history with Dr. Daniel Charles.
“We have a really good backstory with him [and] Charles. So that’s coming into our storytelling, which we’re excited about,” co-showrunner Diane Frolov previews. “Charles knew him as an adolescent, and some things went bad in that relationship, and he definitely is carrying some resentment, and Charles is carrying some guilt.”
Ripley’s troubled past, which has shaped him into the man he is today, will cause problems for him in his new job at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, especially when it comes to his dynamic with Charles.
“This a guy who had a very rough childhood, and those rough edges are still in the character,” Schneider describes.
Adds Frolov: “He’s very smart. He had a full scholarship to Columbia. He’s really an ace. But he grew up in Chicago, and, as Andy says, he had a very rough background.”
While things get off to a rocky start in his reunion with Charles, Ripley does fare better with the rest of the hospital staff.
“Nobody knows about his relationship with Charles except Charles. [To] everyone else, he’s this great doctor, charming guy,” Schneider says.
Ripley even forms “large positive connections” with his ED boss, Dr. Dean Archer, and colleague Dr. Hannah Asher, Schneider reveals, adding that there are potential romantic sparks between the newcomer and Jessy Schram’s OB-GYN.
Chicago Med fans, are you looking forward to meeting Dr. Ripley? And are you already into the idea of him and Hannah as a couple? Hit the comments!
Not surprised about a potential romance between Hannah and the new doctor
Well let’s just hope that this romance between them works out better than it was between Hannah and Will. Not saying Will wasn’t a good man but Will wasn’t over Natalie. And even Natalie’s mother agreed that Will was a great guy for Natalie not Marcel.
I hope it is short lived because all of us are waiting to find out what will happen with Archer and Asher.. They are the couple everyone was talking about when Season 8 ended.. Come on NBC Chicago Med, Dean Archer needs a little love in his life and Hannah is the perfect one for him.. She keeps him grounded and he is a better man because of her.
How about Marcel? you’ve only one woman in ED and making every male crush on her. Introduce a representation or balance the cast.
Very disappointing to read. Asher and Archer were the best part of season 8 and we’ve all been waiting to see them finally get together. Instead she’ll be paired with the new doctor who fits the typical mold of a network tv couple. Chicago med had the potential to do something different and the show runners just ruined it.
She’d be better with archer than the new guy
Med will lose fans over Archer and Asher not ending up together. It’s been the most intriguing part of the show. A real misstep by the bosses. I’m much less excited to watch the show now.
I’m probably the only one who isn’t rooting for Asher/Archer as a romantic pairing. I tried to get into it but the huge age gap is just icky to me. I like their dynamic but want it to stay platonic. Bring on Luke Mitchell!!!
I’m just so happy that this marvelous show is going to be back. I’ve missed all the drama of the hospital and the great acting. Kudo’s to the writers and Actors. Can’t wait!
After last night’s episode it feels more clear than ever that Archer and Asher belong together. I think pairing Ripley with Asher would be boring and expected. I hope the show runners make Asher/Archer end game.
Just watched the season premiere. Kind of a strange episode. Did they change how they film the show or something? Like the actual camera work. Ripley could be interesting but felt like he was overacting. His facial expressions felt over the top. I think since there’s literally no one else to pair him with they’re going to use Asher. Let’s just hope that storyline will be used to ultimately get Asher and Archer together. Like maybe Archer gets jealous and finally realizes he has feelings for Hannah? Fingers crossed.
I saw the first episode with him in it. Frankly, I think he’s a tad ‘stuck on himself’ and arrogant. That’s just me. I have a nephew named Mitch Ripley and he is so much kinder, however, this guy who plays Dr. Mitch Ripley’s real name is Luke Mitchell!!! Call me biased, but ‘our’ Mitchell is completely different from the actor, at least we can see that I’m relieved!!!!!
I have to say I am disappointed. It seams like they are going to pair Hannah to the new guy and Hannah/Dean isn’t going to happen. Once again a couple that was teased at is nothing but a trick to keep us hooked. Jay/Hailey (pd), Klaus/Caroline (tvd, originals), Garcia/Alvez and even Olivia/Elliot (l&o svu) are not together yet. There are more examples. I get that friendship is nice too, but…
I have to agree with one comment, the new guy as love interest is the generic choice! But maybe the writers change their minds later on! One can hope, keep rooting for Hannah/Archer
My motivation of watching season 9 was to finally see Hannah and Dean get together! Don’t like Ripley, hes to arrogant and won’t do good to Hannah specially being in recovery. I hope the producers reconsider the turn the show is taking and bringHannah and Dean together.
