Grey’s Anatomy Bringing Back Cristina? Here’s What Sandra Oh Says

In Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith and Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia are working in secret to revolutionize the way that researchers approach finding a cure to Alzheimer’s disease. So it would only make sense for the sisters-in-law to call in an assist from Sandra Oh’s brilliant Cristina, right?
Right. But alas, as Oh has maintained since she exited the enduring ABC drama back in Season 10, she has no plans to make a guest appearance the way that everyone from Kate Walsh (Addison) and Jessica Capshaw (Arizona) to Jesse Williams (Jackson) and Sarah Drew (April) have. “I love that people are still [so into it],” the fan favorite told Entertainment Tonight on April 9 on the red carpet for her new HBO series, The Sympathizer. “At one point, I was, ‘Come on, come on.’ But now I love it. I love that you asked me that, because Cristina Yang is, of course, near and dear to my heart.
“[But] I will say,” she hastened to add, she wouldn’t be back. “Not anytime soon, my love.”
A 2005 Golden Globe winner for her work on Grey’s Anatomy, Oh sees the operating room door as being closed. Nevertheless, “I hope people feel like I did my job, which is that I brought to life a character, and she had a growth over 10 seasons, and that it was true,” said the OG cast member. “She was ready to move on, and so have I.”

She gave the show a decade of her life, and did some excellent, memorable work in the process, and then she moved forward. That is a very normal and healthy attitude to have about a job.
The trouble is that many people (myself included) have a rather abnormal, possibly unhealthy attachment to the world of Grey’s, so we still miss our faves.
Good for her. It’s not her fault ABC has continued to keep stretching out the show’s
lifeline. She did her part for a good number of years and left on good terms to try other stuff.
Anyone that thinks she’ll appear before an announced final season will be disappointed I feel…..I can see her appearing at some stage in the final season, probably not the series finale – a la George Clooney and co in E.R’s final season. If I end up being wrong on that, I be disappointed but happy I got 10 years of Yang.
Yes I think the only chance of her appearing will be in the series finale or an episode leading up to it. Which is 100% her right! She gave the show 10 years, she deserves to move forward as the other commenters have said.
The writing for the veteran cast has been a dumpster fire for several seasons now, it’s best she doesn’t return.
I for one will never give up hope. Cristina will return.
You have to understand this from her viewpoint. She was an accomplished actress before Grey’s Anatomy where she appeared in over 200 episodes.
She was in movies like the Diary of Evelyn Lau where she was in the lead role as well as Double Happiness and appeared in Arliss and Big Fat Liar not to mention the huge movie, Sideways. She has only had more success since leaving Grey’s. Between Killing Eve which was a huge hit and she won awards, Quiz Lady with Akwafina in a lead role, and now Invincible on Amazon Prime she is really busy. I can see why she does not want to come back to Grey’s Anatomy as she did her time and now, she wants to put it elsewhere. I am sure many won’t like this but at its peak Grey’s Anatomy drew over 20 million viewers a week. Now it only pulls in 3.5 million viewers a week – still a decent showing with the deterioration of viewers as people dump cable and go to streaming, but nothing like it was at its height. She might (long shot) come back for the final episode when that happens but I could not imagine seeing her otherwise ever again on the show.
I am not going to watch Gray’s anymore because now they are bringing back characters that I was glad were gone. Jessica Capshaw as Arizona is my one character that made up my mind. I will miss a good show…I said good show. I don’t blame Sandra Oh. She is one class act!
