The Challenge: USA wrapped up its first season Wednesday, and while it crowned CBS‘ first-ever champions, it also branded itself as “The One Where Everybody Quit.”
I admit: It’s very easy to be a keyboard warrior, watching the show from my temperature-controlled living room and comfy couch, as I armchair quarterback this whole shebang. But after 43 seasons (spinoffs included; 44 if we’re counting the Spring Break Challenge), the night’s Quit-a-Palooza was unlike anything we’ve seen before, and frankly, it wasn’t all that exciting to watch. Let’s break it all down, including who was medically DQ’d, who tapped out and who snagged that lucrative grand prize.
In the finale’s first hour, the players are well aware that the final is right around the corner, and they’re all cognizant of who they want (and don’t want) to run that last challenge with. But before that happens, there’s one more female elimination at hand and the pressure is on.
In the season’s first-ever night challenge, players swim across a lake in the dark to reach an abandoned town. There, they must solve puzzles in order to collect tokens and tires that are worth points. Whoever earns the most points, wins. And you know what happens to the lady in last…
—
Two guys tie for first: Tyson and Dom. Sarah takes the win for the women, marking her first individual win in her entire reality TV career. But which female is heading straight to the Arena? Angela, who spent waaaay too much time on a slide puzzle trying to earn a pink tire.
At the Arena, Tyson votes Cayla into elimination, while Sarah and Dom overrule him by throwing Alyssa in. And it’s going to be a doozy, a total Challenge staple: Pole Wrestle! Unsurprisingly, Angela destroys Alyssa in two rounds, and we finally see a rare glimpse of emotion out of BB ice queen Angela. (Well, she seemed to be crying. Were there actual tears? Think we’d need a microscope and a slo-mo rewind to solve that mystery.)
THE FINAL | As the players board a private jet to the mountains of Patagonia, Ben tells us he’s worried about his shoulder which he injured in a gnarly fall during the last challenge. Before the final even begins, TJ has some bad news: Ben is, in fact, medically DQ’d. Looks like this is one win that won’t be handed to him on a silver platter. (I said what I said!) Snark aside, you never want to see someone removed from the game like this, so I do feel for the guy.
Players will compete in teams over a series of checkpoints, plus, the Algorithm will decide the matchups. If your teammate quits, you’re also out. (Ouch!) The first pairings are as follows: Danny/Cayla, Dom/Angela, Tyson/Justine and Enzo/Desi. Sarah’s starting out alone.
CHECKPOINT #1 | They begin with a freezing swim to the shore, where they must complete a puzzle. The teams will earn a scaled amount of points based on where they finish in each mini-challenge. At the end, whoever has the most points for each gender will win.
Enzo does the unthinkable and quits mid-swim, which also takes Desi out of the running. And now a special note to all future Challengers on MTV, Paramount+ and beyond: DON’T GO ON THIS SHOW UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM. You are wasting your time and wasting our time. TJ hates quitters and so do we. The end. This is so, so incredibly devastating for Desi. Anyway, Danny and Cayla finish first and bank five points each.
CHECKPOINT #2 | The new pairings: Danny/Angela, Tyson/Sarah and Dom/Justine, with Cayla running solo. After a sprint, it’s time for a gross eating challenge! They have to eat an entire onion, full garlic cloves and an entire thermos of lemon juice. (But hey, at least it’s not bull testicles or monkey brains, right?) After their snack, they must do some math as they follow a series of equations. Cayla struggles hard with the eating, but keeps on fighting. Angela and Danny bank first place points on this one.
CHECKPOINT #3 | New teams: Dom/Cayla, Angela/Tyson and Sarah/Danny, with Justine going alone. Here, they must memorize a series of numbers, collect a decoder and run along a path. After adding up the numbers and using the decoder, they have to unscramble letters to form a phrase. Tyson and Angela crack the code first and win the leg, while Justine times out.
CHECKPOINT #4 | It’s now Danny/Justine, Tyson/Cayla and Dom/Sarah, with Angela alone. It’s the overnight portion, and duos must move a huge mound of dirt, while their partner gets some rest. With Angela being alone, she’s at a serious disadvantage. She opts to sleep instead, figuring she’ll take last place points in exchange for being fully charged for Day 2. Her “strategy” comes back to bite her: When TJ wakes them up bright and early, he asks her what happened, then he shockingly disqualifies her. (I don’t disagree with the decision here, but shouldn’t Justine have also been DQ’d for not completing Checkpoint 3? That feels a bit inconsistent. However, it would’ve been unfair for her to sleep all night, while everyone worked hard. I’m torn on this one. Let me know what you think in the comments.) Dom and Sarah win five points for the task.
FINAL LEG | The Algorithm is once again no more, and now it’s a brutal footrace to the top of the mountain, with some puzzles along the way. If players finish the task, the money in their individual bank accounts is theirs. Also, points for this portion are doubled, so first place gets a whopping 10 points added to their overall scores.
Tyson takes a quick lead for the men, while Justine leads the pack for the women. The second puzzle is a batch of Sudoku puzzles, and luckily for Danny, he studied them before going on Survivor. Danny scurries into first, as Tyson loses his hefty lead.
Tyson, Justine and Dom then hit rock bottom AND THEY ALL QUIT. My mouth is literally agape. The Challenge has never had this many quitters in a final. Ever. And I’m legitimately shocked. Then Cayla quits too! Sarah may still be on her first puzzle, but all she has to do is not give up and finish to claim the win.
And that’s exactly what she does. Danny makes it to the top of the mountain like a BOSS, while Sarah completes the Sudoku. She may have been one of the most unlikable players this season (facts are facts), but she doesn’t quit and that’s respectable. She becomes the only female to make it to the top, and when she does, TJ announces them as the winners of The Challenge: CBS! And since everyone else tapped out, Sarah and Danny win all of those bank accounts too, on top of their share of the $500,000 grand prize.
Did the right people win? You’ve got opinions and we want to hear ’em. Vote in our polls, then drop some comments!
As a longtime viewer of The Challenge that was one messy finale! Justine allowed to time out of checkpoint 3? Angela “quitting” (I think it was lame she stopped, I also think producers should’ve told her that would be considered quitting b/c that didn’t seem clear). I’d LOVE to read the release these players have to sign… making them climb a snow covered mountain without giving them gloves?! you know how easy it is to get frostbite. I don’t blame any of them for quitting when you can’t feel fingers. I’d rather have fingers than money. Kind of lackluster finish to a so-so season of The Challenge but I’m happy for Danny. I’d love a mix of some of these players with the MTV players in a future season.
Definitely should have been allowed to stay after Enzo quit….there would have been an even amount of players and nobody would have had to run alone.
If that were the case Angela would have won.
You cannot assume that Angela would have won. Did you expect Tyson to quit Sodoku?
Tyson is very self centered and he tried to make everyone see it his way!!!
There are certain challenges that are simple for one challenger, like the first swim/puzzle challenge that Sarah won. A partner can help with the puzzle, but can also cause your elimination (Enzo). The challenge that Angela quit REQUIRES two teammates. That was simply unfair. As a culture we celebrate the fact that Ali rope-a-doped George Foreman, essentially strategizing that he would benefit from having his opponent tired out. The same strategy works in other sports as well. Had all the contestants finished the finale, Angela might have paid the price for accepting last place points in that leg…but, the strategy was sound (if within the rules).
They made it fair for Angela by giving her half the amount of dirt to move. She said it herself.
Agreed! She had half the pile! Justine had all 10 numbers which I felt was unfair yet she didn’t give up!
Exactly. Justine was still trying, she timed out because everyone else was finished. Any pair would have been given the same consideration. My very first thought when Angela said she was going to take last was they should eliminate her because she didn’t even try. From the way TJ explained it, it sounded like one person in a pair at a time could sleep, but until the task was done at least one person had to be working on the task at all times.
I didn’t think of that but you’re totally right. Poor Justine had to memorize 1 million numbers and did not get a break by cutting it in half while Angela did get that break.
I agree and I felt to whole random select was fixed.. Everyone knew that Enzo had a fear of water.
Who he was paired with wouldn’t have mattered it’s not like he would have been by himself. Only the women were because Ben had to leave. Unless you’re just saying the producers wanted Desi out.
Justine timed out while attempting the challenge. Angela just stopped trying because she was ‘tired. ‘ Big difference
Yup! I agree and she should have known she was going to be disqualified because of what happened to Enzo when he quit during the first leg.
100% with you here!
It was clear that someone had to be shoveling at all times. That is how I took the instructions; I did not think there was any ambiguity. I would understand if she thought she could take a break, not completely stop. Once going into the tent with the site not occupied by a competitor, that is against the rules.
Angela dirt pile was half of what every team of two had, this way the playing field was even. She didn’t even make an effort and that’s why she was disqualified!!
Cayla had a rough time eating the food Challenge and came last. So if she thought like Angela she would have said I’m not eating that and I will take last place. But she didn’t she sat and ate it all by herself with no one to encourage her and she finished the task even though she got last place points. If Angela was DQ’ed that would have been very unfair to Cayla!!
I for one was so happy when Tyson(I’m God and so full of myself) quit like the little biatch he is!! And I was happy to see Angela DQ’ed, couldn’t have happened to better people!
And I was extremely happy for Danny when he won!! If he didn’t Kiki would have cut something off I think lol. And good for Sara to push through as the only female to finish. Especially after Angela and Alysa were always out to get her, Sara showed them what toughness is all about!!
You went thru all the crap in this game and you QUIT at the end???. Seriously why did you bother at all? Lame.
I generally liked the season, but I hope Sarah is never on a show I enjoy again. I couldn’t stand her the last three seasons she was on and she’s not even a fun villain to root against. She just sucks joy
Totally agree. Didn’t like her on Survivor and can’t stand her even more now.
Ditto. Well said.
I second this 1000%
And she’s going to be the female US representative for the international version. *blech*
I might not like her values, but I love her as a competitor.
exactly. She didn’t give up and fought for that 15,000 dollars and was pleasantly surprised. But the look on her face when TJ said they will be representatives for the world competition said oh crap I have to do this again…. LOL
Same here! I was excitied for her when she reached the top of the mountain and didn’t know she had won.
So many people disliked Sarah but liked Angela. To me, Angela was a sociopath. She didn’t care who she f’d over as long it kept her safe. I liked Sarah on Survivor and I was so happy she won The Challenge USA.
I will say it really flipped throughout the Season. Sarah’s obsession with winning was incredibly annoying and Angela getting the best of her was quite entertaining but once things played out Sarah got her win and Angela started plotting it really switched for. Probably because i was pleasantly surprised by Cayla and Justines performance and i think Desi was quite superior to all the girls. So my favoritism shifted to The Fab 5 & Enzo while the others plotted. Halfway through Tyson also got intolerable. So that Alyssa vs Angela elimination was satisfying.
Angela didn’t get the best of her, the other women failed her. She was absolutely right that five of them could eliminate Angela quickly. Instead they let Angela and Alyssa crush Sarah for no good reason.
You’re speaking of that specific challenge. I’m talking from episode one and onwards. Sarah was craving a win and Angela and whoever was teamed with Tyson kept getting the best of her. Weirdly enough that’s the episode that did it for me. Seeing that all the guys wouldn’t vote either Alyssa or Angela, and the girls having to play their game, which in reality was Angela’s game was when the switch flipped for me and was rooting for the 3 girls left. Thus Sarah,Justine and Cayla, because unless Enzo won, it would take a lot for any of the guys to budge and vote their way. So was extremely happy when Dom voted Alyssa. 3 of the Fab 5 were the final 3 girls. Gotta be proud of em.
Rules are a bit confusing on this final show. I wonder if there was a ‘timed out’ time for Angela shoveling gravel…or was she required to shovel all night.? I didn’t think she should have quit so early though…but it seems she was unaware of the time she was required to spend with a shovel. Justine was timed out at an earlier checkpoint. Are players aware of how much time each checkpoint has to complete? And jeez…you send people up a snowy mountain without gloves?
That’s insane.
It was not confusing. The rules are consistent if you have watched so many seasons of the challenge. You must work until you complete the task or are told that time has run out. Also, I have seen challenges much harder than this one, but it’s probably in the top 10 in difficulty, as far as weather goes. Some of the tasks were simple compared to other finals.
I can’t stand Sarah I wish Angela would of won she deserves it!!!
I will respectfully disagree with you opinion. I think Angela was a bully, a manipulator, a snake and a trash talker. She manipulated all the guys except Dom and Desi into playing right into her hands so that she could have the finale that SHE wanted. Especially Desi who wasn’t even aligned with her in the first place. She isolated herself from all of the girls except Alyssa and made herself out like she was miss high and mighty. Very cocky. Calling Enzo a weak player after he crushed three players in elimination rounds was ridiculous. Talking about how Cayla didn’t deserve to be in the finals was crap because Cayla played really well this season and won a couple challenges. And then doing everything she could to eliminate Sarah in the tiles challenge because she didn’t think Sarah deserved to be there was the icing on the cake. You shouldn’t need to sabotage someone else in this game to get far. You should be able to do it on your own by winning your own challenges. She made her little “cool kids” gang and isolated other people to make them feel like outcasts. I don’t think anyone who has to make others feel bad to make themselves feel good deserves to win any competition. I’m glad she was disqualified. She got cocky and it bit her in the butt. Angela was the villain, not Sarah. Sarah just wasn’t about to let Angela get what she wanted, and look where Sarah is right now. She is a true example of never giving up even when the chips are down.
None of that changes the fact that Angela was the best female competitor.
false
She won 4 challenges and 1 arena. She was the only athlete to complete the truck challenge.
Sarah won because other people gave up. Her drive is impressive but she is not the athlete that Angela is.
She only deserved to win if she would have won it. She’s the one who quit. No one made her quit and no one was disqualified taking her out with them like Enzo did Desi.
I cant reply to Tasha directly but I didnt say she deserved to win. I said she was the better athlete. She quit – that was her choice. Sarah won because she didnt give up and the other people just quit.
I’m sorry I didn’t mean to reply to you lol
Exactly!
The only people defending Sarah, must be family members. If you actually watched the show, Sarah talked a big game from the start and didn’t win any challenges til the very end. I’m sure if Angela was still in it, she would have won since she was the strongest woman competitor, clearly. Sarah was the bully here. Not even going to watch her represent USA.
I’m not a FAN of Sarah but I do like her better than Angela but I Angela is an amazing competitor. But Angela quit so that’s that and she only has herself to blame.
On Point, Jen Kel…. thats exactly what I saw the whole show… Sarah was my favorite player, especially because she never gave up. I was jumping for joy when she won.
I’m on board with your perception of Angela. Here’s another item I took issue with: her crocodile tears after destroying Alyssa. Angela intentionally put friend against friend at every opportunity she had without a moment’s hesitation. For her to suddenly get all weepy at the end and realize that emotional burden when you’re up against an ally completely reeked of hypocrisy.
I respect Sarah’s determination, but she was bit much on this show. A lot of these people take things way too personally, her included. It’s a freakin game. While I’m glad she never gave up and that’s what led to her winning (which is a great example for everyone), I was rooting more for Cayla.
I agree with almost everything you said. I just had to put my 2 cents worth in. It IS a game but you throw $500k into that game and it does tend to become personal. We are all human, we cant’ help it. Money rules the world.
Also the guys helped her in the one challenge by rinsing off the sudsy soap on which she had to run back and forth. She would not have won without the help of Tyson and the other guy. She had so much help, but when it came time to do something on her own, she quit. What a LOSER. We know how TJ feels about losers. Also Golden Boy Tyson also quit. Good example to your children, you LOSER and QUITTER. Bye, bye.
Well said. I totally agree.
Jen Kel I agree with you 1000%!
Angela was a bully!
Sarah is a true champion because against all odds she prevailed! Sarah pushed herself to win and didn’t have a whole lot of help doing it!
Angela was so busy trying to get rid of Sarah that she dropped the ball and beat herself hahaha and I for one was so happy when TJ DQ’ed her. She probably would have quit with her number one because the two of them were hold hands thru the whole challenge!!
I couldn’t disagree more; Sarah has the grit and no quit.
I am so glad Sarah won! I hated Angela. She was a very good manipulator. I think it was the right thing to do since she quit.
Why disqualify Angela TJ what a disappointment she’s a Fan Fav
He has to be as fair as possible. Rules are rules.
She’s not my fav. Where are the stats?
I can’t stand Angela’s holier than thou attitude. She was a bully, and she wasn’t remotely likable here or on BB. She may have been good at some challenges, but she also lucked out by getting certain teammates for certain challenges. She reeked of privilege and I’m glad TJ eliminated her. She and Tyson were by far the worst players to watch and I’m glad they both lost.
So you’re saying screw the rules. LOL
I feel run out rule needs to be set on the checks points and not just couple like first and third. Where told last place after teams finish time let’s move on because that befit the productions team they can get everyone to night thing. It funny to me. it seems like to run time rule dosen’t befits the production team anymore starting on night one. If may the rule where Angela just had to keep trying till everyone else done maybe it would better and then she might try. It looks like to me she would be all night in to morning still moving the pidle where everyone else got sleep. Plus because only person need to on pile at times everyone is already getting bit rest at some point where she not and that’s not fair. Or could make no rest till team is done that would be most fair In this case. Once then everyone done let Angela be done too. Then on that final puzzle where everyone quit their should had been like 2 hour time limit to complete or you could move on. sudoku Puzzle are hard enough but high attitude freezeing temperature and snowing man that way too much for most. It look because the run out time doesn’t befits anymore productions their like screw these people.
I think the end had no time limit which is why they couldn’t time out trying. Angela might have timed out had she not stopped well beforehand.
Maybe Angela got DQ’d because she didn’t even attempt to do the challenge and just decided to take the L whereas Justine attempted checkpoint 3 and got timed out before finishing. 🤷🏾♀️ I could be wrong, but that’s just my thinking on the situation.
I agree. Justine was mumbling the numbers and walking towards the puzzle. Angela was like “ I’m out ✌🏽“
You are correct, this is why it happened.
Nah she actually moved a few wheel barrows full of dirt. Don’t you recall her just tossing the wheel barrow inside the pit? It was a time out, not a quit. This show’s lack of preparation was terrible.
How was it a time out when other people looked at her like she was crazy when she went to her tent while they continued the job. SHE QUIT
This just goes to show that the OG’s on MTV have way more heart and what it takes to complete TJ’s final. And let’s be honest that was a pretty easy final compared to recent finals run by the OG’s!
OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS even the eating challenge was mild in comparison. They have no idea. LOL
I’ve never watched The Challenge before and I absolutely regret wasting my time on it this season. No one should’ve been at the mercy of their partner in the final or forced to compete alone when everyone else had a partner. Desi was robbed. Angela should’ve been told she’d be DQ’d if she stopped. Sarah winning by default literally makes me feel sick. Never watching anything associated with this franchise again.
I wouldn’t go by this one season. This was definitely toward the bottom of the ranking. Each season has different rules. I wish Desi could have stayed, but those are the rules.
My feelings exactly. Never watching this show again….well, unless Angela is on it. 😆
Well did she really need it to be spelled out for her when she saw what happened when Enzo quit? He saw a few yard before quitting just like she filled a few barrels before quitting.
Don’t judge the REAL Challenge by this crap. :-)
They should’ve let Desi finish stage one and then made it so there’d be one all women team to balance out Ben’s DQ.
.
I did see gloves on them at one point. Seeing Tyson’s hand shaking from his personal camera hurt me so much
.
Angela should’ve tried for some time then slept then woken up again to continue. That way it would appear that she at least put some effort in. She literally said “I quit” when heading to the tent to sleep. Of course she’d be DQd
.
I don’t like Sarah. She was cocky but constantly loosing the only thing she has going for her is she didn’t quit. Doesn’t mean she’s good at the game though
I think they felt it would put the women at a disadvantage if they were to be paired together; plus, you can’t change the rules mid-challenge. Angela should have tried until she finished or was told she timed out; those are the rules. I am sure she would have gotten more clarity, not that it wasn’t clear. Someone must always do the task (one of the partners or a solo individual); that is crystal clear. Sarah obviously is good at the game; she follows the rules, does not quit, thrives in eliminations, and much more. I might not like some of her values, but she is a great competitor. She gives it her all and then some.
I’ve never seen or even heard of the challenge before, but I wasn’t impressed. Seemed like a popularity contest with the popular kids against the uncool kids, with the popular kids getting the uncool kids tossed out. I was rooting for the underdogs. Like the worst of high school. I hated Tyson and Angela and was glad to see them lose. I didn’t like that they kept ganging up on Leo. I wanted either Sarah or Cayla to win for the women and was happy that Sarah and Danny were the winners.
It was exactly the same on Big Brother on Angela’s season. she was at the center of the cool kids group. If you were one of the outliers, your were quickly picked of. I was so happy when she was eliminated, although my 19 year old son was not …
I was happy to see Alyssa and Angela, “the mean girls” out of the game. The algorithm added to the show and reduced the cliques. A swim test should be a prerequisite for being on the show. Loved the show happy for the winners.
It’s never been a prerequisite and it’s not going to start now. LOL
If the contestants were smart they would all know how to swim but that’s up to them. It happens all the time on the OG challenge and that’s even with repeat players. The fans are like OMG you STILL don’t know how to swim. Or WHAT you’re back and still complaining about how you hate heights. LOL
The difference between timing out and opting out is major. Justine was stopped; she would have completed the task if she were given the opportunity to do so. Angela just decided to stop, which is different than being stopped.
perfectly said.
CBS should have never aired this show. The fact that virtually every person quit in the end should have been an embarrassment to the producers. Will never watch any variation of this show ever again and I hope all the people that competed on this show and quit never see a television camera again. Get a real job and a real like and stop trying to make a living on “reality TV” because there is nothing real about it.
I enjoyed the season! I think it was very fair they disqualified Angela because she didn’t even try! Justine tried and just didnt finish in time, she didnt give up and that was the whole point. If you watch there were little comments that would come up after each contestant and if others finished and you were the last one to finish you got timed out and were just done.
was Angela given half the dirt the teams of two got ? They didnt spell that out. What was the difficulty level of those sudoku puzzles given?
According to the podcast, Sarah and Dom were the only ones to finish the wheelbarrow challenge. So it’s super unfair to give a DQ to one person. Also, unclear why they don’t get time out on the sudoku challenge (also never shows Sarah finish the puzzle so she times out there). Lots of inconsistencies between those who can time out and those who get dqed (and also Desi was robbed)
Actually they did show Sarah complete the puzzle. It was the final leg, there was no timing out as they had to finish both puzzles and get to the end to get their money.
Did you watch the show are you going by what Tyson said, like how the heck he knows what happened if he wasn’t there, Tyson is all talk, she also completed the hexagon puzzle she didn’t time out but Tyson lying saying she did when he wasn’t even there.
Ugh…I will be happy if I never see Angela or Tyson again on a reality show. Their arrogance is so off-putting. Good for Dom for being willing to put Alyssa in the final battle with Angela. The guys made me sick defending those 2 girls when they were the only ones who were directly responsible for someone else (Sarah) finishing last in one of the individual challenges. I find it hysterical that something as simple as a sudoku puzzle did so many of them in.
It’s not the challenge unless you’re running against the real cast. Pit them against MTV cast if you want to test them, but be really to see them fail.
Remember, the MTV crew have gone up against and beaten professional athletes so they have to be the odds on favored .
Also remember that the MTV people came from other reality shows like Big Brother to begin with. They were all newbies at some point.
Well Are you the one was the first non Real World or Road rules cast members to join the show and that was like in Season 27. Big Brother cast members only started showing up in Season 31. Which was like 6 seasons ago. Lol
I think there were two problems
There should of been 30 minutes limits. I know they writer wrote one but if there was for all the checkpoints. Either they didn’t know about it or they quit too early
The second problem was
No one had any ties to the challenge
Half of them didn’t need the money
The others it was no big deal
Now look at
Paula
CT
Emily
Sarah
Who went seasons without winning.
When they win it meant more than the money
Angela could have still continued had she shoveled ONE trip right before the last place pair finished. She could have gotten her sleep & moved further on. As for everone else that quit, it just goes to show that they really aren’t familiar with the show.
The whole final was a steaming, stinky pile of monkey poo.
Justine may have ‘timed out’, but she attempted to complete the task. Angela thought she could just not do it. Big difference to me. If Angela’s ‘strategy’ is legit, then couldn’t Enzo have just rest instead of swimming on the first leg?
Proud for Danny and Sarah !!! All the way thru,Tyson and Angela ,were so sure(and bossy)! Sorry TYSON!
