Netflix‘s Queen Sono has been dethroned: The streamer has cancelled its first African original series despite previously renewing it for Season 2.
According to South African news outlet Channel24, the renewal was rescinded due to production challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with season 2 of Queen Sono,” Netflix said in a statement. “A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series.
“Netflix is also grateful to the… cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world,” the statement continued. “We’ll continue to work closely with South Africa’s creative industry to keep producing more compelling ‘Made-in-South Africa’ stories.”
Series creator Kagiso Lediga also put out a statement, which read: “We wrote a beautiful story that spanned the continent but unfortunately could not be executed in these current trying times.” [pmc_inline_gallery]
The action series followed the titular Queen Sono (Quantico‘s Pearl Thusi), a highly trained top spy in a South African agency whose purpose was to better the lives of African citizens. Its first (and only) season dropped on Feb. 28.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19, one of the TV industry’s (many) new normals is a wave of reversed renewals. Several other shows that were picked up for additional seasons have also been cancelled, including fellow Netflix series GLOW and The Society, as well as ABC’s Stumptown, truTV’s I’m Sorry and Showtime’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida. (For a complete list of rescinded renewals, click here.)
TVLine’s Streaming Scorecard has been updated to reflect Queen Sono’s cancellation. Are you sorry to see it go? Hit the comments with your reactions to the news.
Is 2020 the year of reversal renewals?
Seems to be but until everyone is vaccinated so many production, not all, don’t have a choice. Better safe than sorry.
That’s a real shame, it was a really great show that was different than what we normally see in North America. Shame on Netflix. I’m also getting really tired of these renewal reversals – which are disproportionately affecting woman-led shows.
Filming would have been required in multiple countries, some of which have closed borders, quarantine requirements, lockdowns and curfews. The show simply cannot be made.
Yet crap like Virgin River gets renewed. The typical Netflix subscriber just wants fluff.
It’s not just Netflix that’s affected, every streamer and network worldwide is as well.
This was renewed: Unfortunately, they can’t produce the show with everything that’s going on, so they reversed the renewal. Different from a straight cancellation, especially since you’ll notice the show’s creator said they couldn’t continue.
Doesn’t change the fact that Netflix products more trash than treasure now.
I totally agree with you on that
Netflix gonna Netflix.
Once upon a time there were shows that were cancelled and then picked up by other / saved. Now shows are renewed and then unrenewed/ cancelled. Talking about emotional elevator (I am still sad about Stumpdown).
I Personally Love Virgin River and I happen to be over 50. Whatever Floats Your Boat😊
You can watch Lifetime. Leave Netflix to the young folks.
Lmao
I’m over 50 too and I hate Virgin River but I loved Queen Sono the action, great actors and if I’m all the way honest it was refreshing to see a Black woman in this type of role today. I hope they can find a way to bring this series back or someone else picks it up.
Queen Sono had potential to be an amazing series I don’t understand why they can’t just shoot parts of the series where people have been tested already in locations they can get to coz not all locations are locked down.or coz it is African themed so it’s cancelled.
I usually shy away from series based in other countries. But this was actually a good show. The cast was good, and the seamless language transition and subtitles was very east to follow. Lead actress was casted well and her role and character background story was interesting and intriguing. I really could see the storyline just starting to be unfolded. All in all disappointed there will be no second season
I think Hulu is appearing to be a better platform nowadays than Netflix.
8 really wish they would bring Quee Sojo back it was excellent
..
I really enjoyed this show and was looking forward to the next season. Intriguing story. The cancellation is understandable but it still sucks. Argh!!!
I am very heartbroken at the ending. There could have at least been one last show where Queen gets revenge for the death of her grandmother before completely canceling the show. Now we will never see what happened in the end. I would not recommend anyone watch this awesome so because it’s going to leave you upset.
I also enjoyed Queen Sono and was looking forward to seeing what came next.
I just finished binging Queen Sono and either read the sad news of its cancellation due to the Pandemic. I with they would just say “postponed” because I fell in love with all the characters immediately and was amazed that every single one had three dimensions. Please consider bringing back when it’s safe. More power to powerful women!
This was a great show, and it being a first, why not just postpone production rather than cancelling? Come on Netflix.
yeah, real disappointed about this! I’m gonna tell my girl to cancel. It felt like our lens into the continent, hope it gets picked up elsewhere
Loved this so much and was so waiting for the return. I hope this will be reconsidered we need more beautiful iconic scenic and thrilling series like this and with this cast intact, not a knockoff pleaese
This is BS. The show could have been delayed or why can’t it be filmed in other parts that will let them. We personally don’t know where these shows are being filmed. It can be modified
Why not delay? Why rescind? My whole family across multiple generations LOVED Queen Sono !! People have waited years for other shows— we will wait for Queen. Netflix, please come to your senses!!! Reverse the cancellation!
To see a black Wonder Woman along the lines of 007 battle the evil in Africa was a pleasure . A real disappointment to see its renewal cancelled .. also it gave me a somewhat greater knowledge of the troubles in Africa.
So disappointed to hear this show was canceled. I was so looking forward to season 2. One of the best Netflix originals I watch thus far. Surely hope Netflix will bring it back after the pandemic is over.
Queen Sono is a great show. I really hope that when they are able to film again, that they are returned to netflix. If not get after it Oprah net work !! Cant go wrong with this one.
I am sorry to hear this. Great show
Boo! This was actually a great show & should have come back with a Season 2 even if delayed!!
After the pandemic please reconsider to do Season 2. Love this show, I felt so connected and inspired .
So mad about this!! This is why I hate watching new series, it used to be the major networks guilty of this, but now Netflix. How about instead of spending millions producing 50 or so new series constantly focus one the ones that did well and bringing them back. Why keep teasing and frustrating viewers with one season cliffhangers, if that’s the case work new shows as one season only and let them end properly. Think I will start sticking to movies and seriously thinking of just letting Netflix drop since they don’t care that much for movies anyway.
I am a big Queen Sono fan and I am extremely disappointed and angry about the cancelation of the second season. Not sure why we can’t have a second season when the coronovirus allows like many other shows. As a Black woman, I don’t get to see many strong Black women especially African Black women. This cancelation is wrong!
