Hulu‘s Harlots will no longer be taking appointments, while Doris Quinn’s mission of Reprisal has come to an end.
TVLine has confirmed that Harlots has been cancelled at the streaming service, nine months after its third season came to a close. Set against the backdrop of 18th-century Georgian London, Harlots offered “a new take” on the city’s most valuable commercial activity — sex — based on the stories of real women and written by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre). The cast included Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville and Jessica Brown Findlay.
Sources meanwhile confirm for TVLine that Reprisal will not be back for a second season. Released in December, the the Abigail Spencer-led, hyper-noir series followed a femme fatale who, after being left for dead, sought revenge against her brother (played by Rory Cochrane) and his gang of gearheads.
“I’m so grateful I got to bring Josh Corbin’s ‘The Doris’ and Reprisal to life,” Spencer shared in a statement to TVLine. “Though it won’t go on from here, I’m so grateful it will live on, on Hulu, as a completed piece. That’s always the dance with series work — you hope it goes on and you want it to feel complete if it doesn’t.
“We left it all on the screen,” Spencer continued. “I’m so proud of the work we did and the stellar work of our diverse cast — special shout-out to my scene partners Craig Tate, Wavyy Jonez, Bethany Anne Lind, Mena Massoud, Gilbert Owuor, Rodrigo Santoro, Madison Davenport, Lea Delaria, Rhys Wakefield and David Dastmalchian — for being a part of bringing more underrepresented voices and characters to the screen.
“Exploring the power and strength of a broken woman who has rebuilt herself is a special feat,” Spencer said in conclusion. “The rise of the underestimated is a beautiful thing which is the heart of this story. I hope everyone finds The Doris at some point and, much like its pulpy tone, pulls in a unique cult following. I’m grateful to Hulu, A&E and The Littlefield company for making it so.”
TVLine’s Cable Renewal/Cancellation Scorecard has thusly been updated.
Guess “The Great” has good chance now for renewal.
Reprisal was cancelled a few weeks ago. Or somewhere around that.
Just binged 3 seasons of Harlots. Pretty good show, but it looked like Season 3 was the end, since several key characters died and departed from the show. Definitely worth watching!
My husband & I really liked it, as well. Glad that it wrapped things up since it won’t be back.
So would you say that it ends properly? Because I would like to watch it now that I know it´s not coming back but I don´t want to if it ends on a cliffhanger or something.
There might be more stories to tell, but I think it ended without any cliffhangers.
I agree. There wasn’t really anything unresolved. It’s safe. :-)
Thank you
Rory Cochrane plays Abigail Spencer’s brother in Reprisal, not Rodrigo Santoro.
Yes! I loved seeing Rory on tv again!
Fixed.
I’m disappointed about Reprisal’s cancellation.
Reprisal was a treat that I stumbled across this past December. I wish there was more story.
Any updates on Light as a Feather?
Ooh, good question! More ‘Light as a Feather’ please, Hulu!
I read somewhere it was cancelled months ago.
Interesting. Shows I didn’t know existed until now, have been canceled. Love Abigail Spencer though, not sure how I missed that one. So much content, so little time.
s3 of harlots was wretched. the first two seasons were incredible but the third was unwatchable. can’t say i’m too broken up about the cancellation considering some of the choices they made.
Will Hulu ever see an original scripted drama/comedy make it to five seasons? East Los High had four seasons and The Handmaid’s Tale is coming back for its fourth season, but nothing else has made it that far. To be fair, I gave up on Harlots, but I had hoped Shut Eye and Runaways would continue.
With the new Atwood book, Testaments, Handmaid’s Tale now more fuel to keep going. I know they haven’t followed the original book completely, but at least Testament gives them a direction for June. They can fill in the gap years, but they know where she’s headed. I have a feeling as long as Moss wants to keep going, that show will continue.
At this point in time, I think actors should just start expecting any show they do to be one and done. There is just SO MUCH content that barely anything can expect to go long term. Basically once you wrap on a show season you should pretty much start looking for a new gig. Let your old show keep you in 1st position, but just know that is going to be meaningless.
Bullschtik!! You renewed 13 reasons why, but not harlots?!! That’s ridiculous and lame. I can’t even finish the 3 rd season on 13RW, I loved it but it’s like really? Harlots on the other hand, I’ve been waiting for the 4th season. Bring it back!!!
Your comment doesn’t make any sense. 13 Reasons Why is on Netflix and Harlots was on Hulu. You’re comparing shows on two different streaming platforms.
Your right it was an amazing show. That’s really the only reason I kept my Hulu subscription.
We’ll end up cancelling hulu. Getting rid of good shows and now it seems they just don’t have enough original programming anymore.
I loved Harlots and watched all three seasons within a month or so. I was so looking forward to season 4! I hope there will be a similar new show, at least.
I’m very upset I love harlots … can’t believe it’s over 😢
Please bring Harlots back ASAP! I’ve been watching this show faithfully and it’s absolutely devastating to see it leave just when Lydia and Lucy started working together AND Emily has a brothel all her own now. Come ON! Season 4 was going to be EPIC! Bring it back please
I totally agree
Omg! Just when Lucy started coming into herself they cancel the show. Hulu has pissed me off. It’s a good show and has a lot they can feed off of to make it a continued show. What a waste
I hate that Hulu cancelled the best show they have ever ran… Harlots.
I along with others adored Hulu’s Harlots. It’s outrageous there’s no season 4 and beyond ……
Harlots has so much more of a story that could and should be developed! This show could add so much more of the history of the period for all the fans with an additional for a 4th and 5th season.
