FROM THE TOS PRESIDENT
Deborah Bronk

Hello TOS members!

The TOS Council has completed a full draft of the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who sent in comments on the brief outline I shared back in September. I once again ask for your input now on the completed draft plan. Nothing is set in stone. This is your society and we need to hear from you. Any and all comments, suggestions, complaints are welcome. If you like the plan and don’t have specific suggestions, a simple thumbs up would be a useful data point.

For a society like TOS, with a Council made up of very busy volunteers and members spread around the world, inclusive governance can be a challenge. An actionable strategic plan, which has been crafted with input from and vetted by the membership, is a valuable tool to keep the Council focused on work that is meaningful. The inclusion of metrics of success will allow us to evaluate whether our goals are being met, and if not, to make needed adjustments. All of which can be reported back to the membership periodically.

Please send your comments to [email protected] by November 19. I will collate your suggestions and bring them to the Council for discussion. My hope is to deliver a fully vetted plan to president-elect Paula Bontempi by January 1 when she takes the reins.

Survey of Member Experiences with STEM Professional Society Culture

TOS members are invited to take part in a research study focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professional society member experiences with their STEM professional society culture, policies, and practices. This research study also aims to better understand the intersections of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) issues within and across STEM professional societies. The findings of this study will support STEM professional societies in making more intentional and informed decisions about the changes they undertake.

STEMSEAS Student Experiences Aboard Ships

WHEN: February 1–9, 2025
WHERE: Honolulu, Hawaii
SHIP: R/V Sikuliaq

Applications are now being accepted from undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and early-career scientists to participate in an NSF-funded research cruise aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth focused on understanding hydrothermal circulation in oceanic crust approaching the southern Mexico subduction zone. This project will involve the collection of seafloor heat flux data and high-resolution 2D multi-channel seismic reflection data along a series of transects crossing seamounts, plate bending faults, and the toe of the margin wedge. The overarching goal is to determine the effects hydrothermal circulation on the thermal state of the Cocos plate near the deformation front in an area with flat slab subduction.
