While global labour laws fight for work-life balance, India’s corporate elite relentlessly push for long, grueling hours. Is it legal? And does it really help in nation building?
It was a spring Saturday on May 1st, when some two lakh workers laid down their tools and marched up Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
“Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will,” they chanted in unison, demanding an eight-hour work day. That was in 1886. The refrain fast became an anthem for the workers’ movement that swept the US in the mid 19th century.
