Meerut: A Haridwar resident and his Meerut-based associate were arrested after a brief encounter near Lakhnar village on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a trucker and his helper on the Saharanpur-Panchkula highway. Police said revenge was the motive behind the killings.
The investigation into the deaths of Mohd Husnain, a 28-year-old driver from Haridwar, and his 30-year-old assistant Mohd Shoaib from Saharanpur, led authorities to Mohd Shadab and Aamir. The victims were found on Saturday afternoon, with gunshot wounds, in a truck parked near Nangal police station.
The police said during interrogation, the suspects revealed that Shadab wanted revenge for his brother Mohd Maruf's death. Maruf, a close friend of Husnain and Shoaib, was found dead in a village pond last year after a drinking session with the two men. While Maruf's death was ruled a drowning, Shadab suspected foul play and believed his brother had been killed by Husnain and Shoaib.
Saharanpur (Rural) SP Sagar Jain said, "On Nov 7, Shadab learned Husnain and Shoaib were transporting a truck from Punjab. Joined by Aamir and a third accomplice, Shadab followed their truck in a car. When the truck stopped on the Lakhnaur bridge, the suspects used a pistol and a country-made firearm to kill Husnain and Shoaib before fleeing."
Police have seized the firearms and the suspects' vehicle and are continuing efforts to apprehend the third accomplice. A reward of Rs 25,000 had been offered for Shadab's capture.
