Madurai: Six Tuticorin fishermen who were stranded in the sea after their boat developed a snag were rescued by marine police on Saturday.
The six, Vignesh, Alphonse, Jude, Sudarshan, George, and Sathishkumar, ventured into the sea from Therespuram in Tuticorin district for fishing on November 21. Though they planned to return to the shore by Nov 26, they did not return. Based on a representation submitted to the authorities by their fellow fishermen in Therespuram, marine police personnel went in search of the missing fishermen. They located the boat nearly 45 nautical miles off the shore lying still. The CG personnel rescued the fishermen and brought them and the boat to the shore in Tuticorin on Saturday.
Meanwhile, 12 fishermen from Tharuvaikulam released by Sri Lanka on the Indian govt's intervention reached Tuticorin in the early hours of Saturday. Sri Lankan navy had detained 22 of the fishermen on August 5 and seized two boats. Following the Indian govt's intervention, a Sri Lankan court released 12 of them without any fine. The fishermen who reached Chennai on Friday evening were brought to Tuticorin on Saturday.
