Nickie Harte Kelly 2 song EP, or single? No matter, this is top-notch stuff. One traditional piece and one original. Steven Collins plays all instruments and sings on Above the HIll, with Liz Overs providing her haunting voice on The Garden Gate. Both pieces are excellent, but having a special place in my heart for eeriness, going with The Garden Gate as my favourite piece of the two. Favorite track: The Garden Gate.

These 2 songs have been on quite a journey to get here; the first demo of THE GARDEN GATE was recorded in Feb 2022 with the song originally intended for inclusion on the ENGLISH COUNTRY MUSIC mini album (the lyrics coming from the BUSHES & BRIARS folk songs book which spawned the rest of the ECM set). Alas, it fell foul of the deadline and never made it on to the finished record. It was actually one of my favourite songs from the ECM project and so I continued working on it and vowed to use it on the next Owls album. Liz Overs recorded her vocal back in the summer of 2023, but the album project was then shelved as real life took over. During that downtime my vision for the project went through many phases as I searched for the right sound. A period of intense listening to This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, and Shelleyan Orphan bled into my work, and a kind of 1980s-gothy-dream-pop sound started to emerge. I completely re-recorded the music for THE GARDEN GATE, and luckily Liz's ethereal vocal worked even better than it did on the original version.

ABOVE THE HILL was first conceived in March 2023 - by chance I heard the song Valentine's Day by KLAUS NOMI and straight away I knew I could work that into the new direction the Owl Service album was moving in. Once I'd worked out my own vocal melody it didn't take long to find suitable lyrics, and they came courtesy of the late, great Peter Bellamy. A very sketchy backing track was recorded once I had the tune in place, but it was then a full year before I returned to complete it after hours of working out the ideal arrangement in my head. I only listened to Peter Bellamy's original version of the song after completing my own recording.
