New Abstract Wikipedia and Wikifunctions updates are out

On August 9, an update regarding the launch of Wikifunctions Beta has been published.

On August 19, an update regarding the proposed template language syntax for Wikifunctions and the Wikimania 2022 sessions dedicated to Wikifunctions and Ninai-Udiron has been published.

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!

The Wikimedia Foundation Campaigns Team invites you to join our upcoming office hours. In each session, we will introduce V1 of Event Registration Tool, so you can begin using it for real events on Meta-wiki.

In V1, the following new features will be includedː

• Support for the organizer to specify an event timezone
• Automatic confirmation emails after participants have registered
• Private registration: the option for participants to register and only display their registered username to organizers of the event and we will teach you how you can use it yourself.

• Tool of the week
  • Cersei - is a tool designed for importing or scraping data from various third-party sources, using source-specific Python code. It can use a "headless browser" to scrape complicated websites that rely on eg JavaScript to navigate. It can therefore access data sources that can not be accessed via eg Mix'n'match. The data from sources can be updated regularly, either for everything, or just changed entries (if the source has a "recent changes" equivalent).
  • Wikidata:Zotero/Cita - is a Wikidata addon for Zotero that adds citations (i.e., what other items an item cites) metadata support to this open source reference management software, using cites work (P2860) information available from Wikidata, and enabling users to easily contribute missing data.

• IP Masking: We are continuing to adapt Wikibase to the upcoming IP Masking feature. We worked on hiding warnings about IP addresses being saved when they don’t apply (phab:T353807, phab:T352006) and creating temporary accounts when editing (phab:T354730)

  • We continued working on the ability to get a sitelink for a given site (phab:T344039)
  • We started working on the ability to remove a sitelink for a given wiki (phab:T344685)

Funktionsnyheter

Förbättringar och underhåll

Mer information om uppdateringarna och även förbättringar av programvarans utvecklingskit (SDK) förklaras på projektets blogginlägg. Medan Wikimedia Enterprises API:er är utformade för högtrafikerad kommersiell återanvändning, tillgängliggör också den här ändringen för att bygga många fler användningsfall på tjänsten.
  • Snapshot API (html-dumpar) har lagt till betaslutpunkter för strukturerad innehåll (blogginlägg om detta) samt släppt två betadatauppsättningar (engelskspråkiga och franskspråkiga Wikipedia) från den slutpunkten till Hugging Face för offentlig användning och feedback (blogginlägg om detta). Jag vill bara påpeka att anledingen till att jag vill skriva om min släkting är att han var aktiv som stormästare i ett Ordenssällskap, Det finns en koppling till Tumbo bygden och Sörby gård som fortfarande finns kvar, Han ägde en affär som var en viktig del av stadskärnan i Eskilstuna i många år så sammantaget med en del andra saker så tycker jag att även om han inte är ett officiellt känt namn som Ingvar Kamprad som grundade IKEA så finns anledningar att han förtjänar en plats med en artikel. Jag tänkte även skapa en informationsartikel om bland annat Ordenssällskapet 14 M 99 som startade just 1899 och var aktivt i nästan 100 år och det finns planer på att väcka rörelsen till liv. Även hans svärfar stinsens grav är föremål för utredning om kulturgrav på Tumbo kyrka då han var en viktig del av bygden. Hello, and welcome to the app's third newsletter of 2024! In this edition, we will highlight the accomplishments and progress made during July, August, and September 2024!

iOS Updates

• iOS Suggested edits project

Over 20,000 images have been added via the "Add an Image" feature across both iOS and Android! (T372954), good opportunity to try it yourself ;) This tool allows users to enhance Wikipedia articles by adding relevant images. It’s a great way to contribute and improve the visual experience for readers.

• Alt Text Experiment

The iOS team kicked off the Alt Text experiment to improve image descriptions for accessibility. This feature helps ensure that visually impaired users can better understand the content of images through descriptive text.

• Navigation Refresh

The iOS App has been transitioning from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports both reading and editing. After adding a number of editing features, the navigation system of the app needs to grow and change to support them and future additions. Improving our navigation will allow for more app users to discover editing features, and allow experienced users quicker access to their most-used tools. This refresh incorporates findings from usability testing with multiple variants of the App's navigation. The team is currently planning phased rollouts over the coming year to improve user experience. (Phase 1: T373714)

Android Updates

• Places

Improvements were made to the Places feature in response to user feedback, including larger cluster icons and a Wikipedia logo for articles without images (T371067, T370094). Also, the team is exploring designs to allow users to explore articles from multiple language wikis simultaneously and will adjust the zoom logic to show nearby locations upon launch (T352757, T368792).

• WikiTrivia Game

The team prepared for the WikiTrivia Game during a hackathon, selecting a data source and creating initial designs (T371508, T371510).

• Recommended Content

Work began on adding Recommended Content to search, iterating on design concepts and testing performance (T371613).

• Machine-Assisted Article Descriptions

The team is now engaging with several wikis to implement Machine-Assisted Article Descriptions based on prior experimental results.

• Sharing reading lists

Android users can now share reading lists with others, expanding community collaboration (T370703).

And some performance enhancements: Revision tags for app edits were successfully implemented (T366731, T366732).

The app now supports URL sharing on Pixel devices, thanks to volunteer developer contributions (T370020).

There may well be errors with particular inputs, and the text may not be quite as natural as you might expect, but that's where your improvements to your language's lexemes, other Wikidata items, and the tool's source code come in!
• mlscores: Tool for calculating multilinguality score of Wikidata items (including properties). E.g. for Wikidata (Q2013), the scores are - en: 99.66%, fr: 89.49%, es: 84.07%, pt: 68.47%. For instance of (P31), the scores are - en: 99.86%, fr: 87.12%, es: 80.83%, pt: 61.37%.

• Launch of WikiProject Deprecate P642: The goal of this project is to prepare for deprecation, and eventual removal, of the property of (P642). Currently, of (P642) is labeled as "being deprecated", meaning its use is still allowed, but discouraged. From a peak of around 900,000 uses, the property now has around 700,000 uses (see status here). Our goal is to reduce that as much as possible in a systematic way, while ensuring that appropriate properties exist to replace all valid uses of of (P642). The latter is key to officially deprecating the property. Before removing the property, we want to get as close to zero uses as possible.

Uppdateringar för redigerare

• Tillägget Strukturerade diskussioner (även känd som Flow) håller på att tas bort. Tillägget har inte underhållits och skapar problem. • WMF:s sökplattforms-team arbetar på att göra det lättare för läsare att söka i text på sitt språk. En ändring förra veckan på fler än 30 språk gör det lättare att hitta ord med accenter och andra diakriter. Detta gäller både fulltextsökning och sorters avancerad sökning såsom hastemplate och incategory-nyckelord. Weekly highlight

• The Mobile Apps team has released an update to the iOS app's navigation, and it is now available in the latest App store version. The team added a new Profile menu that allows for easy access to editor features like Notifications and Watchlist from the Article view, and brings the "Donate" button into a more accessible place for users who are reading an article. This is the first phase of a larger planned navigation refresh to help the iOS app transition from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports reading and editing. The Wikimedia Foundation has added more editing features and support for on-wiki communication based on volunteer requests in recent years.

Updates for editors

• Wikipedia readers can now download a browser extension to experiment with some early ideas on potential features that recommend articles for further reading, automatically summarize articles, and improve search functionality. For more details and to stay updated, check out the Web team's Content Discovery Experiments page and subscribe to their newsletter.
• Later this month, logged-out editors of these 12 wikis will start to have temporary accounts created. The list may slightly change - some wikis may be removed but none will be added. Temporary account is a new type of user account. It enhances the logged-out editors' privacy and makes it easier for community members to communicate with them. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 12 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Guidance on how to update the code is available. Read more about the deployment plan across all wikis.
• View all 33 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the South Ndebele, Pannonian Rusyn, Obolo, Iban and Tai Nüa Wikipedia languages were created last week. [33][34][35][36][37]
• It is now possible to create functions on Wikifunctions using Wikidata lexemes, through the new Wikidata lexeme type launched last week. When you go to one of these functions, the user interface provides a lexeme selector that helps you pick a lexeme from Wikidata that matches the word you type. After hitting run, your selected lexeme is retrieved from Wikidata, transformed into a Wikidata lexeme type, and passed into the selected function. Updates for technical contributors

• Users of the Wikimedia sites can now format dates more easily in different languages with the new {{#timef:…}} parser function. For example, {{#timef:now|date|en}} will show as "5 November 2024". Previously, {{#time:…}} could be used to format dates, but this required knowledge of the order of the time and date components and their intervening punctuation. #timef (or #timefl for local time) provides access to the standard date formats that MediaWiki uses in its user interface. This may help to simplify some templates on multi-lingual wikis like Commons and Meta. [38][39]
• Commons and Meta users can now efficiently retrieve the user's language using {{USERLANGUAGE}} instead of using {{int:lang}}. [40]
• The Product and Tech Advisory Council (PTAC) now has its pilot members with representation across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. They will work to address the Movement Strategy's Technology Council initiative of having a co-defined and more resilient technological platform. [41]

• The latest quarterly Growth newsletter is available. It includes: an upcoming Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module, new Community Configuration options, and details on new projects.
• The Wikimedia Foundation is now an official partner of the CVE program, which is an international effort to catalog publicly disclosed cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This partnership will allow the Security Team to instantly publish common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) records that are affecting MediaWiki core, extensions, and skins, along with any other code the Foundation is a steward of.
• The Community Wishlist is now testing machine translations for Wishlist content. Volunteers can now read machine-translated versions of wishes and dive into discussions even before translators arrive to translate content.

• 24 October - Wiki Education Speaker Series Webinar - Open Source Tech: Building the Wiki Education Dashboard, featuring Wikimedia interns and a Web developer in the panel.
• 20–22 December 2024 - Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Bhubaneswar 2024 in Odisha, India. A hackathon for community members, including developers, designers and content editors, to build technical solutions that improve contributors' experiences.

Current work

Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module

We will add a new module to the Newcomer Homepage that will allow communities to highlight specific events, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. We have released a simple version on beta wikis and we will soon start an A/B test on our pilot wikis. This module will only display on the Newcomer Homepage if communities decide to utilize it, so learn how to configure the Community Updates module, or share your thoughts on the project's talk page.

One design concept aimed to increase constructive activation

Constructive activation experimentation

After showcasing early design ideas at Wikimania, we conducted user testing of design prototypes. We now aim to engage communities in further discussions and plan to run a targeted experiment, presenting a structured task within the reading view to logged-in new account holders with zero edits.

Community Configuration

This Community Configuration extension was developed to help communities customize wiki features to meet their unique needs. The Growth team is now helping other Wikimedia Foundation teams make their products configurable:

• The Moderation Tools team now provides Community Configuration for Automoderator. (T365046)
• Certain Babel extension settings will be configurable soon. (T328171)

Future work

As part of the Growth team annual plan, we will continue to investigate ways to increase constructive activation on mobile, while also working with Data Products to move forward A/B testing functionality via the Metrics Platform.

Community events

• Growth team members presented Community Configuration: Shaping On-Wiki Functionality Together at Wikimania (slides). The session recording is available to watch on YouTube. This session provided an update on the Community Configuration project and introduced details about the upcoming features that communities will soon be able to configure. Representatives from the Moderator Tools, Editing, Web, and Campaigns teams shared their plans for utilizing Community Configuration in the future. Following these presentations, the WMF Growth team's Benoît Evellin and Martin Urbanec answered audience questions.
• Habib Mhenni gave a presentation of how mentorship works at WikiIndaba 2024. The recording is available.

Tool of the week

• Wikidata One Click Info is a multilingual extension that enables you to search for any item or word that you come across while reading or browsing online. It's an extension that makes Wikidata's data easy to retrieve and access. Install on Chrome browser or Firefox browser. A short video about the usage of the extension.
• CAT🐈: most frequent properties a simple Observable tool which shows the most frequent properties for a set of Items.
• Are you able to learn languages with Wikidata content? In Ordia there is the "Guess Image from Pronunciation" game you can use to learn a few words from various languages.

• A small project on benchmarking query engine performance on useful Wikidata queries is asking for queries from the Wikidata user community to potentially be part of the benchmark. If you are a user of any Wikidata SPARQL service please send queries that you find useful to Peter F. Patel-Schneider. Say what you used the query for and whether you would like to be noted as the source of the query. Queries that take considerable time or time out are especially welcome, particularly if the query caused you to switch from the official Wikidata Query Service to some other service. • Wikier som har aktiverat tillägget CampaignEvents kan nu använda funktionen Samarbetslista. Denna lista erbjuder ett nytt och enkelt sätt för bidragsgivare att lära sig mer om wikiprojekt på sina wikier. Tack till kampanjteamet för deras insats som är en del av årsplaneringen för 2024/25. • Textfärgen för röda länkar kommer ändras en aning senare den här veckan för att förbättra kontrasten i ljust läge. [46]
• Visa alla 32 av gemenskapen inskickade ärenden som löstes förra veckan. På till exempel flerspråkiga wikier kan användare nu dölja översättningar från specialsidan "Vad länkar hit".

• MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference Fall 2024 går av stapeln i Wien, Österrike och online mellan 4 och 6 november 2024.
