12月30日の午前中、米国アイダホ州ヘイデン*1で、母親と一緒にウォルマートに買い物に来ていた２歳の男の子がショッピング・カートに乗せられて、母親のハンドバッグをいじっていたところ、拳銃を見つけて、引き金を引いたら、弾丸が母親に命中して、母親（29歳の核科学者）は即死してしまった。このような事件は滅多に起こるものではないのだろうけど、11月にも、オクラホマ州タルサ*2で自宅の長椅子の下にあった拳銃を３歳の男の子が見つけて、いじっていたところ、弾丸が発射して、１歳の妹のお襁褓を替えていた母親に命中して、母親が死んでしまうという事件が起こっている*3。
