UNISFA denies interaction with RSF troops in Abyei Area
December 13, 2024 (ABYEI) – The United Nations Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has denied claims that its troops interacted with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) elements in Abyei Area.
In a press release issued Friday, UNISFA said it troops did not encounter RSF elements in the disputed region, adding that these false reports could undermine the mission’s impartiality.
According to the peacekeeping mission, preliminary investigations reveal that on 9 December, at approximately 1720 hours, a UNISFA logistics convoy travelling from the Kadugli Logistics Base to Tishwin was temporarily stopped by RSF personnel near Kharasana, 155 km from Kadugli.
“The RSF requested clearance for the convoy’s movement. The convoy commander explained UNISFA’s mandate and the purpose of the convoy. Within an hour the convoy resumed movement and reached Tishwin at 2200 hours,” it further stated.
The mission also confirmed that there was no escalation during the interaction.
It, however, said further investigations are ongoing to establish additional facts, while ensuring the integrity of UNISFA’s operations and personnel.
The mission also reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to fulfill its mandate.
The UN Security Council, in June 2011, responded to the urgent situation in Sudan’s Abyei region by establishing the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The Security Council was deeply concerned by the violence, escalating tensions and population displacement.
