A message from the Office of the Dean of Students
March 25, 2025
Dear Campus Partners,
As many of you are aware, the recent shooting in Las Cruces has deeply affected members of our community. While not all students may come forward, we recognize that some have been directly impacted—either through personal involvement or through the experiences of friends or loved ones—and could be experiencing emotional distress or short-term disruption to their academic responsibilities.
At Student Assistance Services (SAS), housed within the Office of the Dean of Students, we are committed to helping students navigate these moments by offering compassionate support and coordinated outreach. We take a holistic approach—recognizing that a student’s well-being involves more than academics—and work to connect students with resources related to mental health, basic needs, and academic communication.
We’re asking for your help in sharing these resources and referring students who may benefit from additional support:
- Campus Community Incident Report
If you observe concerning behavior or are aware of a student in distress, please submit a report at report.nmsu.edu. Our team follows up directly with students to offer care and guidance. - Student Extended Absence Form
Students who have been directly impacted and are experiencing difficulty keeping up with classes may complete this form at report.nmsu.edu. SAS will coordinate outreach and support around short-term academic disruptions.
Well-being Resources for NMSU Students (Las Cruces/Main Campus):
- TimelyCare – 24/7 virtual health and mental health support
- Aggie Health and Wellness Center – Medical and wellness services
- NMSU Counseling Services – Mental health counseling
For Doña Ana Community College (DACC) Students:
While they are not eligible for TimelyCare or NMSU Counseling Services, they can access medical services at the Aggie Health and Wellness Center. In addition, students can receive mental health and basic needs support through Avanza, which provides case management, resource navigation, and referrals to community-based counseling services.
We are incredibly proud of our students—their resilience and compassion make this Aggie community so strong. Thank you for the work you do every day to support them. Please feel free to share this message within your networks to help ensure students across our campuses are aware of the support available.
If you have questions or would like to consult on a specific student case, please contact us at saservices@nmsu.edu or call 575-646-1722.
