Len Jarvis was working at a Grays cement works when a West Ham scout saw him playing for a local football club. Syd King signed Jarvis in 1903. Over the next couple of years Jarvis became a member of a West Ham defence that included George Kitchen, Frank Piercy, David Gardner, Tommy Allison and Bill Wildman. During the 1906-07 season the team only conceded 41 goals in 38 games. Jarvis developed a reputation as a hard man. In a game against Millwall on 17th September, 1906, Jarvis got involved in a fight and was suspended for 14 days. Jarvis was sold to the First Division side Bury in 1909.
