MinGW (Minimalist GNU for Windows) is a free, lightweight toolchain that brings GCC and other GNU utilities to Windows for building native apps without extra runtimes. It’s great for porting Unix/Linux software and supports C, C++, Fortran, and more. Pros: Minimal setup, native Windows binaries, no extra DLLs required. Cons: Outdated (last updated 2021), tricky installation, occasional installer bugs. Still useful for legacy or lightweight builds, but most developers now prefer the actively maintained MinGW-w64 for better compatibility and 64-bit support.
