The example colormap looks promising as a viable alternative. It appears to have good contrast. How well does this type of map work with the colorblindness filters? Eric |

While it's taking longer than hoped, just to reassure you that this isn't total vaporware, here's a screenshot from the colormap designer that Stéfan van der Walt and I have been working on... still needs fine-tuning (which at this point probably won't happen until after I get back from PyCon), but we like what we're seeing so far :-) The colormap shown has, by construction, perfect lightness linearity and perfect perceptual uniformity, according to the better-than-CIELAB model used by the viscm tool I linked upthread. -- Nathaniel J. Okay, just about finished WebAgg, but it has raised an interesting question about layout... I started working to standardise using the way we do it on ``Gtk3``, i.e. using a pure vertical layout, adding elements from either the top or the bottom of the container and setting widgets (i.e. the canvas) as expandable. In my original version of this MEP I used a boolean to specify whether to add to the beginning or the end of the window's layout. ``Tk`` gave me the idea to extend past this and use string argument of 'top' or 'bottom', no real difference but just to keep it flexible for the future. However now I rethink that strategy having converted Qt and now on WebAgg, perhaps we should conform around a Grid layout, by that I mean we have the following: North ---------------------------- | | E | | W a | Centre | e s | | s t | | t | | --------------------------- South For now we will just use Centre and South (with the canvas in Centre; and Toolbar/statusbar in South), but it also leaves it open for the future. If I recode it like this, I would make each 5 positions a box, with the compass points adding elements from the outside inwards which keeps the pattern explained above. What do people think? I don't feel 100% comfortable for limiting ourselves to just one layout, but I can persuade myself that we have to decide on something and atm we only have a really adhoc system, so definitely an improvement, and should anything happen in the future to make us change our mind we can the workaround of using centre as our new starting point, or wait for a major release. Looking forward to getting some feedback on this. |

Hi I am expecting to be at Scipy but I have already volunteered to help out with the Software carpentry tutorials. Ben, Have you sorted out if you can make scipy this year and does anyone want to be back up on teaching the tutorial? It seems a shame to not have a mpl tutorial available. I am probably going to submit a 'state of the library' talk and do not want to do both. Tom On Thu, Mar 26, 2015 at 5:06 PM Michael Droettboom <md...@st...> wrote: > This sounds great. Hello, I want to compile matplotlib for Android, but I really don't have any clue where to start, well I have already stated with learning SL4A, also inclement sir(Alexander Taylor) says that its already been done by someone but I couldn't find it at all so if somebody has any information about it please post it here, also if you have anything else that may help in this, please post that here too. If somebody is interested in this, they can check my progress here <http://immovableone.blogspot.in/>. Lastly, Thank you very much for all the informative comments on the thread 'Kivy backend', that really helped me a lot in writing my proposal. |

This sounds great. Unfortunately, I can't attend Scipy this year due to a family commitment, but would be more than happy to help put together and review materials beforehand. I also think we should have a 'state of the library' talk. We definitely have a few important things to announce/show off: - FSA - nbagg/notebook - new default colors - style module and should have a couple more by July - sane serialize/deserialize + interop with plotly/bokeh - better toolbar - better interactive OO - improved docs I will be there for the main conference and the sprints and am willing to give this talk, but will defer if someone else wants to do it. Does anyone want to volunteer to be Ben's second on his tutorial? I am proposing to move the MEPs from the wiki into the main documentation. https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/4249 The main benifits to this are to make preserve the MEPs long term, to keep a better history of their development, and to improve the discussion around them. The motivation behind using the wiki was to reduce the barriers to working on the MEP, but it has not worked out as well as hoped. Having to modify MEPs via a PR does increase the barriers on working on them, but it allows us to apply the tools we already use for code review to them. Tom |

wouldn't `np.sqrt(np.ones(NFFT)**2).sum()` just be NFFT? So, it looks like our power spectra isn't normalized at that point. But, IIRC, the code that calls this helper function does normalize the result if the user specifies it to be. Forwarding an email to the devel list, we seem to have an error in mlab. Dimitris: Please send future issues like this directly to the mailing list or create an issue on GH. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Dimitris Daniel <dda...@gm...> Date: Thu, Mar 26, 2015 at 4:04 AM Subject: possible issue with _spectral_helper function in matplotlib/mlab.py when compensate windowing loss To: <tca...@gm...>, <mar...@gm...> Dear Mr. Thomas and Mr. Martin, First of all I would like to thank you for your work. My name is Dimitris Daniel and I use _spectral_helper in a process. I think that there is a problem when we try to compensate windowing loss. You use the row: result /= (np.abs(windowVals)**2).sum() However as I can see in Bendat & Piersol Sec 11.5.2. (see attached 3.png) I think the right is something like: result *= np.sqrt((np.ones(NFFT)**2).sum() / (np.abs(windowVals)**2).sum()) Actually I had some correlation problems with the data from a customer of my for which I build a script for Signal Analysis. He gave me the input signal and the output he gets from the hardware he is using. I use some parts from your functions and it was not possible to get the same results. By changing this row the results are matching together. Am I missing something or am I right. Thank you very much for your time and sorry for any inconvenience. I am looking forward to your response. Best Regards, Dimitris Daniel |

Giving it a cursory glance, I think it's mostly current. Is there something specific that isn't working for you? Correct, I meant that I don't see my refactor of the webagg backend affecting the refactor I have done in the main PR. I do the refactor of the core classes in https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/4143 and then make separate branches (which will turn into PRs once the main backend has finished) for the individual backends. For example refactoring the 2nd backend on my list (Tk) caused me to make some small adjustments to the base refactor. After then I have had no problems, so when I said ``but nothing that breaks the main PR'', I meant it as an affirmation of that. Just updated the MEP with more info. From what I gather, I don't see any problems. Refactoring WebAgg makes for slow progress, but nothing that breaks the main PR. As far as I can tell it can get merged while I work on the other backends and submit them as separate PRs. With this main branch merged we can then progress/finalise MEPs 22 and 23. Hello, I am having trouble following the instructions given here --> https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/blob/master/lib/matplotlib/backends/backend_template.py#L16 it feels like the code was refractored (changed?) and those instructions never updated?
