Dev-C++ is really great and id like to thank the authors for exerting so much effort into this wonderful software. Before I used the older version for testing purposes because I have several compilers in my system, those compilers were for sale but I got them from free source. Those compilers had a lot of features but now that I have this new beta version I am going to remove some of these compilers that I have. I just hope that you guys read all the bug reports and feature request... I hope you guys wont mind me comparing but here are some features I like about some of the compilers/packages: MS Visual C++ has a good source level debugger and a "step into feature", Borland is a great compiler and offers a lot of help on both the compiler and editor. The potential of this product is really great and I hope I could donate some bucks for this in the future. So far Im doing almost all of my work on Dev-C++ and still inspecting it and typing down whatever bug i find. Gerald R. Actually, no. rm is a Unix program. We use a Win32 port of it because DOS del sucks and because cmd.exe isn't available anywhere. But Colin included the wrong port. |

I think the problem is related to Dev-C++, in fact it assumes your system implements the command "rm"; this is probably true for recent versions of Windows (sorry can't check that), but is surely wrong for Win98SE and previous versions (because the command implemented is "del"). As Colin Laplace says, you can download "rm" from the web. My solution has been writing an elementary version of "rm" (I stored the executable file "rm.exe", in the directory where MinGW binaries are) that uses "del". In case you are interested, here is the code. file: rm.cpp ----------------------------------------------------------------------- #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <string> /********************************************************************* turn each slash ('/') in a backslash ('\\') parameters: s = the string with slashes returns: the string with backslashes GNU "make" requires paths to be written using UNIX style (even if here we are dealing with the Windows port of the program) while the standard Windows command "del" requires paths to be written using the DOS style (that is, using a backslash to delimit names of directories). *********************************************************************/ std::string rev(const std::string& s); /********************************************************************* rm - remove a file usage: rm FILE [...] arguments: FILE = file to be deleted ... = more than one file can be specified samples: rm c:/foo/bar delete file c:\foo\bar rm c:\foo\bar same as above rm foo bar delete files: foo and bar rm -f foo bar same as above, "-f" is ignored This program is used in place of the Windows standard command "del" for the following 2 reasons. 1. The standard command deletes one file at a time or more than one file, only if the names are specified using wildcards. For instance you can say: "del foo" or "del *.o" but you are not allowed to say "del foo bar". 2. The standard command understands paths written using the DOS style for paths, that is "foo\bar" and is unable to locate a file if one writes "foo/bar". *********************************************************************/ int main(int argc, char** argv) { while (--argc && **++argv == '-') ; if (argc == 0) // nothing to work on std::cerr << "usage: rm FILE [...]\n"; else { std::cerr << "deleting ..."; while (argc--) { std::string file = rev(*argv++); std::string cmd = "del " + file; std::cerr << '\n' << file << ' '; system(cmd.c_str()); } std::cerr << "\ndone ...\n"; } } ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// std::string rev(const std::string& s) { std::string p = s; for (int i = 0; i < p.size(); i++) if (p[i] == '/') p[i] = '\\'; return p; } ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Luigi gi...@li... |

I was refering to C. As you did notice you have added an extra '\0' to every string. "AN" is 'A' 'N' '\0' "AN\0" is 'A' 'N' '\0' '\0' You assign it in an element for 3 characters, meaning that the last '\0' is lost. This is valid in C, but C++ is more protective and it gives an error (you lose characters). But i saw you do it in a C file and you should not get an error. Sorry, the error is NOT in CreateProcess, but in GetStdHandle. It looks like Dev-C++ can't get access to the stdin/stdout/stderr handles for GDB for some reason. I tried a quick install on a different machine. If it helps, both problem machines are running Win98SE, which has been known to behave differently than the NT/2K/XP OSs with regard to console handling. Just as a test, I went ahead and unzipped the Insight5 package over the Beta3 install. Running that had the following results: - Still got error with GetStdHandle. - Insight ran, but did not know which program to debug. - After telling Insight which executable to debug, it all went fine except that the output from the program never appeared on the screen... Dunno if that helps any, Mac >My new problem is that I can't seem to debug. I tried to add in tools menu the option of gprof, but everything I do the only I achieve is that the window of gprof displays a fraction of second and it does nothing (in the parameters I type <EXENAME> or <EXENAME>.exe, gmon.out and > outputfile.txt. But the outputfile does not appear. I use Dev-Cpp 4.01. I don't find any mention of tools configuration to confirm I am not doing wrong things in help. If I run gprof from cmd.exe it runs well. I can avoid projects in too deep folders and use gprof from cmd.exe (command.exe for windows 9x), but it would be nice to be able to run it from the menu. |

I think this was said here before, but I had some problems with my connection and I think I lost any information about this: how can I take the last version of DevCpp. I always have to wait for a new beta version or I can download it from some place? I can build projects now. Has the Beta3 installer been updated so that other users won't run into this? My new problem is that I can't seem to debug. The program built and will execute properly, but when I attempt to debug I get a CreateProcess error (like maybe it couldn't find the GDB.EXE), and then a comment from Dev-C++ that I needed to turn on debugging first. My first thought is that the CreateProcess error wasn't being examined, and was simply being assigned the most likely problem -- lack of debugging info. But then I thought, "well, I haven't actually gone and turned on debugging info anywhere...", so I tried to find it. I couldn't find anything obvious for turning debug info on or off, except possibly the compiler command line option entry boxes. Unfortunately, I am not a big native GCC user (hence why I am so interested in IDEs like Dev-C++). The project is a simple console mode STL "Hello World!" program. I just insert "Hello" and "World" into a list and then iterate over it dumping entries to cout. Very silly, but I want to start using STL and BOOST heavily, so I am trying to burn it into my reflexes... I considered installing the Insight package from Dev-C++ 4, but I really wanted to see how the new integrated debugging was going, since I know that making that work properly is a major effort. I had other stuff to do yesterday and couldn't spend much time tracking this down. I will likewise be too busy today, but I should be able to do any necessary research tomorrow. Please don't expend any great effort trying to reproduce this until after I can do some more work on my end. I just thought that if I had done something foolish or if this was a simple problem someone might be able to give me a fix quickly. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. My apologies if I have done something stupid. Thank you, Mac - _____________________________ /"\ Mac Reiter \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign Nomadics, Inc. First off, thank you Colin for the new RM.EXE. The class browser in the latest beta is not working. Do you expect the next beta having this fix? The file extensions under file/open does not include "*.hh", but rather includes ".rh" as C++ header files. Will "*.hh" be an option in the further releases? A code beautifier would be soo helpful. Is there a plan to integrate one in the near future? thanks, Elif Kurklu mailto:ek...@cs... |

GoodDay fellas, I downloaded the latest release of our favorite Dev C++ (without the compiler and the debugger). As iti is now I have a seperate directory = for Mingw which i use together with Dev C++ and it works fine. I will now = like to learn how to use the GDB debugger so I downloaded it. I however don't know how to intergrate it with DevC++. First of all when = I extracted the file it created a dir c:\gdb-5.1.1 with several sub dirs = one of which is gdb. In that dir I found a readme file with instructions on = how to build GDB. I have followed the instructions but the build does not = work. please I'll be pleased to know how to build GDB and get it integrated = with Dev C++. One may suggest that I download Dev C++ with the debugger but honestly I prefer to keep things seperate. My system is a : Win 98, with these dirs MingW, DevC++, and Gdb-5.1.1. Thanks for your help. Napoleon. |

I downloaded the Beta3 installer and everything installed fine. I then made a trivial "Hello World" project and hit Rebuild All. I was informed that the required DLL MSYS-1.0.DLL was missing. After much fiddling around, I discovered that the rm.exe program (presumably from the new MingW set) is the offending program. I realize that MingW development is separate, but I was curious what I need to do to get the Beta3 Dev-C++ functional. I was concerned that I might have gotten some confusion between previous versions, so I made sure to uninstall and delete all previous versions of the various components. I have tried downloading and installing the newest MingW, and have also downloaded and installed the newest MSYS (which is a rather odd little project, and I would rather not install it if I can help it). I have also tried placing the MSYS-1.0.DLL from the MSYS system into the \dev-c++\bin\ directory so that rm.exe could find it, but that didn't help. If it helps for recreating the problem: - Win98SE - All previous versions of Dev-C++, MingW, and MSYS uninstalled and their directories were deleted. - DevC++ 4.9.3.0 installed (to D:\Programming\Dev-C++, if that matters). Because I am evaluating C++ dev environments, I also have the following software installed, which could easily cause problems if Dev-C++ is very dependent on environment variables (a practice which I loathe -- if you are going to depend on an environment variable instead of a config file, at least make it a unique env variable, not something like "INCLUDE". Sorry for the unfocused rant...) - Visual C++ 6.0 Learning Edition (came with a book) - Quincy 2000 - Digital Mars C++ 8.28 Any help would be appreciated, because Dev-C++ looks like it is by far the best option of what I have, if I can just get it working.
