Ladies of the Canyon Lyrics

Trina wears her wampum beads
She fills her drawing book with line
Sewing lace on widows weeds
And filigree on leaf and vine

Vine and leaf are filigree
And her coats a secondhand one
Trimmed with antique luxury
She is a lady of the canyon

Annie sits you down to eat
She always makes you welcome in
Cats and babies round her feet
And all are fat and none are thin

None are thin and all are fat
She may bake some brownies today
Saying, you are welcome back
She is another canyon lady

Estrella circus girl
Comes wrapped in songs and gypsy shawls
Songs like tiny hammers hurled
At beveled mirrors in empty halls

Empty halls and beveled mirrors
Sailing seas and climbing banyans
Come out for a visit here
To be a lady of the canyon

Trina takes her paints and her threads
And she weaves a pattern all her own
Annie bakes her cakes and her breads
And she gathers flowers for her home
For her home she gathers flowers

And estrella, dear companion
Colors up the sunshine hours
Pouring music down the canyon-
Coloring the sunshine hours

They are the ladies of the canyon

This song has a whimsical but haunting quality. I keep listening to it alternating between images of a canyon as a metaphor for the streets of New York City and a literal canyon that is the refuge that the people being sung about in the song have flocked to to escape the city and get back to a simpler way of life.

Regardless, I think this song is great. She is the best.

LOVE this song. I always imagine the canyon as a beautiful place where people, especially women, can live the creative lives they want to live, free from the demands of modern society. Each of the women makes her mark by doing exactly what they want in life.

The Trina is Trina Robbins, cartoonist, Women's Comic herstorian and author and editor of countless books and comic books. Definitely Queen of the Underground Comix World, traveler, speaker and venerable Comicon panelist. Early in her career, she made beautiful hand wrought garments, many of which made it onto the backs of hippie rock stars, who invariably became her friends.

This song is definitely about her Laurel Canyon years, I've read several bios of her. I think "Annie" refers to Carole King. Not sure who the other girls represent.
