Purpose

This template facilitates the citation of articles from Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. It uses {{cite encyclopedia}} in its implementation. It provides for links to the Wikisource project Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography, but also links to other sources (for example Google Books), or no link at all can be used.

Usage

Other parameters

  |noicon       = 1 — remove the leading icon 
  |vb           = 1 — if text is copied from an Appletons' article this parameter
                      adds a prescript for article attribution (see the Plagiarism guideline)
  |inline       = 1 — alter the prescript for use within inline citations.

Set defaults for some parameters
 |year          = 1891 — unless wstitle is set (see below) then 1900 unless some other value is provided
 |encyclopedia  = Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography — can be overwritten

Title parameters and url. Either wstitle or title must be set

Using author and year

As an alternative first, last and authorlink can also be used. Up to three authors can be set using either author or first last pairs (see the documentation of {{cite encyclopedia}} for more details).

Using display

The mechanics of Wikisource will sometimes require that a link have disambiguation information which is not part of the original title. The display parameter allows this information to be hidden for the purpose of the citation. For example:

When title is being used, url can be used to specify an external link. For example:

If text is incorporated verbatim into an article, the vb parameter can be used to tack on a notice appropriate to the policy in Wikipedia:Plagiarism.

If vb but the citation is placed within a ref tag pair then inline can be used to modify the prescript:

The first is set if the parameter vb=x is set (or the template {{Appletons'}} is used), otherwise the second category is set unless the parameter notaref=x is set.

will not insert a category, though there will be no noticeable difference in the page. Examples of situations where use of these parameters should be made:

• vb=x is used to indicate that text has been copied verbatim from Appleton's Cyclopedia into a Wikipedia article.
• notaref=x can be used when the template is placed in the "External links" section and so is providing additional information and is not being used as a citation to support information in the Wikipedia article.
