Pedro I (12 October 1798 – 24 September 1834) was the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil, from Dec. 1, 1822, to April 7, 1831, also reckoned as King Pedro (Peter) IV of Portugal. He is best remembered as the man who declared Brazil independent from Portugal in 1822. When the country was invaded by French troops in 1807, he and his family fled to Portugal's largest and wealthiest colony, Brazil. on 7 April 1831 Pedro I abdicated in favor of his son Dom Pedro II, and sailed for Europe.
