The film captures Fleck (played by Phoenix)'s trial for his murder of five people (later revealed to be six, including Fleck's mother). Upon signing up for a music class within prison, he is introduced to Lee (Gaga). Lee claims she was institutionalized by her mother and set fire to her parents' apartment. However, Fleck's lawyer, Maryanne Stewart (Keener) does not trust Lee and later reveals to Fleck that Lee may be lying. Fleck and Lee later become intimate in prison, and Lee reveals she is pregnant. The plot unfolds with Fleck and Lee duetting big band standards together and Fleck appreciating his love for music. A final verdict for Fleck's crimes as Joker determines his fate.
