Protein Intake Crucial for Cancer Patients, Says Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital The Department of Medical Services, Thailand through Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital, has highlighted a significant issue affecting cancer patients: inadequate protein intake due to misconceptions about dietary restrictions during cancer treatment. Many patients mistakenly believe that consuming various types of meat is prohibited, leading to nutritional deficiencies that can hinder their treatment progress. Dr. Sakarn Bunnag, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, emphasized that cancer is a chronic disease posing a long-standing medical and public health challenge. During cancer treatment, whether through chemotherapy or radiation, many patients avoid eating beef, pork, chicken, or seafood, fearing it might be harmful. This misconception results in incomplete nutrition, adversely affecting red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Consequently, patients may not meet the necessary blood value criteria for treatment, disrupting the planned treatment process. Dr. Adisai Phattatang, Director of Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital, stressed that cancer patients require higher protein intake than the general population. He recommended consuming good quality natural proteins such as pork, chicken, and seafood. The protein requirement for cancer patients is approximately 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. For instance, a patient weighing 50 kilograms should consume 60 to 75 grams of protein daily (body weight x 1.2 = amount of protein needed). At the recent Milken Institute Asia Summit in Singapore, I had the privilege of discussing a topic close to my heart – mental wellbeing. As a clinician, I've witnessed the immense stress healthcare professionals endure, particularly during the pandemic, and the stigma patients have faced in seeking help for mental health issues. Thankfully, we’re now in a better place as a society, with greater awareness of mental wellness, improved treatment options, and expanding access through digital platforms. Yet, the challenge remains significant: in Southeast Asia, about 1 in 7 people live with a mental health condition, and many still lack timely access to care. At IHH, we’re committed to bridging this gap. Through our investment in Intellect, we offer a range of digital mental health solutions alongside the essential in-person care provided by our dedicated professionals. This approach not only supports our patients but also empowers our people, as we equip them via the Intellect app to prioritise their mental health – because they are the foundation of everything we do. During the session, I was asked what the future of digital mental health should look like. Vietnam hospital industry is in the midst of an extremely stressful period, primarily due to post-pandemic recovery business, new investors’ expectation but also factors such as talent shortages, a challenging economy and pricing pressure, among others. Many CEOs at hospitals actually retired doctors who have stayed in their current leadership roles longer than they might normally have, in order to help hospitals using own influences, deal with those challenges. According to John Koster MD emphasized on leadership style of hospital CEO. “The egos and the narcissism of some CEOs is a problem,” Koster said. “People don’t love you — they love the role of the CEO and what that person can do for them. And a week after you’re gone, and people move on. The whole notion that people love you and need you — that’s your ego talking to you.” That’s why the complexity requires leaders to be creative, strategic and navigate organizational dynamics, CEO needs to develop a long-term vision (for example, Vision-2030), a culture of respect, transparency, safety and reliability. Many leadership styles are applied in healthcare, the most appropriate for Vietnam market is innovative, transformational, and servant style leaders. Why? Vietnamese staff, mainly doctors are used to being somewhat authoritative themselves, so dislike being directive. Although they will not speak-up, silent, OK mentality but hate directive style, become non-followers and demoralized. Ultimately effect the business performance. Outcomes research shows that collaboration between doctors within and other specialties as well as between doctors and other healthcare professionals’ effects in better outcomes for the patients. The better the communication among stakeholders, the more effective the leadership will be. International accreditation plays a vital role to ruling risk, documented communication, practice collaborative governance against standards; that's where the action is these days for the CEO of Vietnamese hospital. Vietnamese healthcare is becoming highly global, transformative, Omni-channel dominating, social media directive, and technologies driven. The industry is known for shifting regulations, rapidly evolving technological and clinical advancements, rising costs, and growing ethical concerns, CEOs must constantly adapt and innovate solutions. Effective leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the culture of Vietnamese hospital, and ensuring its ability to tackle complex issues related to care delivery. I started becoming active on LinkedIn in 2022 when I launched WE CARE as a standalone company, it was then that I realized eldercare isn't just about technology; it's about fostering human connections. Back in 2011, while working at Energeek Pte Ltd on smart building solutions, we provided IoT and smart tech to various sectors, including homes, offices, industrial sites, and hotels. We plan to redefine academic health with this partnership, which has been more than 10 years in the brewing. One, this is not a typical academic medical centre revolving around a medical school and teaching hospital. Rather, it is a systems level partnership between an entire healthcare system for >1.5 million people and a leading technological university, with the medical school serving as the bridge to multiple schools and disciplines. Second, it is not driven by bottom-up academic research, but by a mission-oriented strategy to take on emerging challenges facing an ageing Singapore and the need for sustainable healthcare and better population health. Third, it is future-facing, to prepare and enable today’s healthcare providers and the people we serve, for tomorrow’s tech and data-intensive medicine. All this is encapsulated in our combined visions to redefine medicine and transform healthcare to add years of healthy life.

9th August 2024 marked the 59th National Day for Singapore since separation from Malaysia in 1965. A very proud day for all Singaporeans to celebrate and reflect on her accomplishments from a very humble beginning. Singapore's GDP grew 460 times in the last 59 years under three Prime Ministers. Per capita GDP grew from USD 514 in 1965 to USD 88,447 in 2024, a 172x growth in the same period. Tremendous progress, thanks to strategic thinking and able governance by the leaders. I had a chance to read the transcript of PM Lee Kuan Yew's press conference on 9th Aug 1965. https://lnkd.in/gzDAjcYa. One of the statements "...we pay our unskilled workers $4.55 a day, and people are washing bottles in Petaling Jaya for $1.50 a day." triggered two mini-research questions. My primary objective was to understand leadership premium in Singapore, which I define as the ratio of compensation of the PM over an unskilled labour. Additionally, I wanted to understand how much unskilled labour has captured their share of the benefits from Singapore's growth, and compare the leadership premium between Singapore and the US. I referred to publicly available data sources and made some assumptions to perform the analysis (table 1). What are some of the insights I learned: a. The Singapore PM's compensation at 90 times the minimum wage earner and 19 times the GDP per capita may be worth the premium for the results delivered, but the optics of the premium growing steadily from 33 to 91 does not look good. Point to note is that in 2007, the PM's compensation was well over SGD 3 million, which would have pushed the ratio to almost 150 times the minimum wage. b. Adjusted for inflation, the unskilled labourer's compensation grew by 310% from 1965-2024, while the PM's compensation grew by 985% over the same period. On one hand, this is an excellent bargain for the Singaporean citizens to pay the premium for the 17,200% growth in GDP per capita delivered by the 3PMs over the same period. On the other hand, the share of the "GDP lift" for the unskilled wage earner has just been very modest. c. Comparing the minimum wage in Singapore and federal minimum wage (some states have significantly higher min. wage) in the US, it looks like the Singaporean unskilled labour counterpart is marginally better off. Singapore PM enjoys almost a 4x leadership premium over the US President, which I am not sure is commensurate with the job description and the complexity. Perhaps the higher premium is justified for the "trusted Singapore PM brand" Great National Day message PM Lawrence Wong- You have inherited a Singapore which is confident and gentler, and much more open to directly investing its resources to improve people at the bottom of the pyramid. Even so, Vietnam healthcare market is passing exciting time right now. Eventually very few hospitals in Vietnam will enjoy exponential growth by 2030. Wherever the hospitals are working on Vision-2030, the major target is either linear or exponential growth! Many PE firms prefer exponential growth as constant multiplication over years! Critically, locals prefer linear growth as constant addition over years, reasonable target @7.6% CAGR, a portion of health expenditure value $33.8 billion expected in 2030. Entrepreneurs and clinical leaders to think exponentially is hard to perceive. Because, local brains evolved in a linear environment where nothing changed over time or even changes perceived very, very slow here. Consensus-based decision also challenging of where linear thinking voices are majority voters who don’t want to change to be exponential. That’s why Vision 2030 is a dynamic effort for the moment. While targeting spoke and hub model, extraordinary alignment within the ecosystem players, operating out-of-box discomfort zone, growing muscles in happening segments, investing 20/80 (pareto law) medical COE programs, going extra miles with patient can mark exponential growth. Look back 100,000 years ago, the traditional healthcare was effectively managing the same as the oldest generations. Nothing changed over centuries or millennia. But today’s healthcare is highly global, transformative, Omni-channel dominating, social media directive, and technologies driven. Highly global, because the spread of incidents or disease outbreaks happen within microseconds. And the rate of digital change (and all exponential technologies) doubles in price performance every 18 to 24 months. Within this revolutionary market, understanding exponentials can lead to the difference between success and failure, between leading disruptive change and being the victim of it. As, Vietnam private hospitals are growing into next generation of interoperable healthcare ecosystem in the Metaverse, and this is the best time to outline Vision 2030 to stay in the future…!
