Post-pandemic, we have observed a deterioration of leadership skills in large organisations: Conceptual thinking is weak. Though it is essential to develop new business models. Attention span and empathetic skills have atrophied. Screen time and hybrid work are primary culprits. Written communication and logic are in decline. Gen AI will worsen this. Not mentioned in the report: the worsening of the externalities of business activity – and the reality that these are now fully in the public view: 29m tonnes of plastic is expected to enter the ocean each year by 2040. "Transforming community health and revitalising lives - enhanced population health span for tomorrow." With that as our compelling vision and energising aspiration, we kick-start another chapter in a strategic partnership between SingHealth (Sengkang General Hospital) and Singapore Institute of Technology, started in 2022 and already boasting good collaborations across disciplines and both organisations. Without too much fanfare and a lot of camaraderie (infinitely more valuable!) we had a half-day Visioning Retreat on Sep 6 among colleagues, partners and friends old and new, rolling up our sleeves and ready to discover our synergies, dream, design and deliver off our dynamic platform for applied learning and research, driving innovation and improving population health in Singapore. We also introduce our #HealthLivingLab to take #future #appliedlearning and #research out of the classroom into the real world, our faculty and students working closely with the industry to solve #realworld challenges in health and healthcare. We will build relationships with the ecosystem including healthcare providers, #lifesciences companies, #digitalhealth and #medtech companies. There will be new #pedagogies, scaling up of #innovative solutions, to meet #community needs and #economic objectives of Singapore. Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix and The Race of Life I have been invited more than once to attend the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. I have declined these kind invitations and have absolutely no interest in even going near it. For those of you attending the Singapore Grand Prix, please enjoy the race, the good food, and the parties. To our foreign guests, thank you for coming to our country. We affectionately call it our beautiful Little Red Dot. I attended the inaugural race in 2008, where I had a beautiful view of the starting and finishing points. With earplugs in, I looked down from the grandstand, trying to make sense of this adult game. Meanwhile, a young man standing beside me was explaining the race. He rattled off facts and figures, including engine models, features, and indicators. Feeling somewhat embarrassed by my ignorance, I turned to him and sheepishly asked, “How do you know so much?” He asked me to look up and pointed to a huge electronic signboard placed across the race track in front of me. “The information is all there,” he said, laughing! Truth be told, I would rather drive than watch, and to be a competitor rather than a spectator. Besides, the noise is just too much for me. For some reason, I have no interest in cars. I can’t even remember the last time I did something for my car on my own, other than putting in petrol and paying fines. We are all created with different passions, gifts, talents, and strengths. We are happiest and perform at our best when we fully utilize these blessings and apply them for the good of others. Remember: Life is about leveraging your strengths while addressing and managing your weaknesses.

Today, the Ministry of Finance (Singapore) published the Singapore Public Sector Outcomes Review - it tracks key outcome indicators across a wide range of areas like education, healthcare, housing, and sustainability. This ensures that our continued development as a nation remains balanced, inclusive and sustainable. On the whole, we have made good progress. But there are still areas to improve and to do better. As directors, we often have a clear understanding of who our stakeholders are, yet there is no universal definition of a stakeholder. This morning, I attended a session on stakeholder collaboration organized by the Singapore Institute of Directors. Read an article today and it touched on the issue of leadership renewal. It mentioned the motivating idea for our government leaders to serve Singapore was the vulnerability we lived in then... and we needed the best to serve. When I started ProAge, many years back... eldercare and workplace health was something nascent. But I always believed that Singapore can be an example for Asia. We lead in rig building, airline, etc... and we can be more. But we must do it with a HEART; fulfilling dreams, creating meaning and contributing to a larger purpose for the common good of Singaporeans. 🙌🏻 Possibilities abound for Singapore and together we can envision a greater tomorrow. I was in Malaysia this week and I see their progress. It is good and we have to work together to uplift this region, though difficult 😅 For our Singapore leaders of tomorrow. Singapore system runs on pragmatism. a post I made in our Straits Times newspaper today. The recent Rotary International Convention brought 14,000 delegates from all over the world to Singapore. The foreign delegates marvelled at how well-organised we are as a society, and at our efficiency, safety, politeness, cleanliness, greenery, transport infrastructure, housing policy, national reserves and multiculturalism. Several delegates asked me, a local delegate, how we achieved this success. I told them it wasn’t always like this and our GDP per capita was only US$500 in 1965. We progressed rapidly because we had a stable government formed by the same political party since 1959. They were shocked. They asked me if we were a democracy or a dictatorship. I told them Singaporeans do not measure our leaders according to dogmas or ideologies. We measure leadership according to the improvements in our quality of life. Over the years, our lives have got better and so the ruling party has won elections every time. Competent leadership includes competent civil servants, civil society leaders and industry leaders. So what is the Singapore system called? It’s called pragmatism. Nation-building is an inclusive process. Our citizens can take ownership of initiatives and have dialogues with the Government to make the necessary refinements. In January, the Singapore Government Partnerships Office was launched, allowing anyone with ideas who wants to work together with the Government to do so more easily. There are also opposition parties to keep the ruling party honest, and social media which lets us voice our views. Our government is not flawless, but we have constructive channels for redress.

⚠️ Businesses making unsubstantiated marketing claims, watch out! ⚠️ CEO of Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) Alvin Koh has said they will go after unfair / deceptive practices under consumer protection law, including #greenwashing and #darkpatterns. And they’ve increased their enforcement team so we can expect more action. Elsewhere, regulators are increasingly taking action against these and misleading claims about #AI. The US Federal Trade Commission has come down on deceptive AI claims in Operation AI Comply, eg recently acting against DoNotPay which claimed its AI service is able to substitute a human lawyer. The European Commission and Consumer Protection Cooperation Network screened 400 online stores, finding that nearly 40% used manipulative practices, including dark patterns. The UK CMA investigated Emma Sleep for false limited time offers and countdown timers. In the US consumers brought a class-action suit against coffee company Keurig for inaccurately marketing its coffee pods as recyclable despite the pods not being widely recyclable in many communities. The settlement required Keurig to pay US$10m and qualify its marketing claims. A study by the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at the NUS Business School supported by CCCS found greenwashing in the form of unsubstantiated claims in 51% of sampled products on e-commerce stores in Singapore, many using vague terms and lacking sufficient supporting information. Apart from regulatory action by CCCS, businesses may face civil liability risk. The Advertising Standards Authority also enforces the Singapore Code of Advertising Practice. Was just talking to someone about how easily someone is called an expert. So many experts in this piece. I think there’s only one among these who can speak with authority and that’s Tan Suee Chieh. He has been consistent in his opposition to the deal with clarity of thought and argument. I’m waiting for ‘experts’ who have rushed to support it without much thoughtful analysis now preparing to do Simone Biles standard backflip to support the government blocking the deal. While I’ve spoken out on several issues with the deal, the only area where I’ve really added something different was about the serious conflict of interest involving the Income Insurance chairman, and how that could taint the deal. From my experience, when there’s a serious conflict, there is almost always a problem with a transaction. At the recent Milken Institute Asia Summit in Singapore, I had the privilege of discussing a topic close to my heart – mental wellbeing. As a clinician, I've witnessed the immense stress healthcare professionals endure, particularly during the pandemic, and the stigma patients have faced in seeking help for mental health issues. Thankfully, we’re now in a better place as a society, with greater awareness of mental wellness, improved treatment options, and expanding access through digital platforms. Yet, the challenge remains significant: in Southeast Asia, about 1 in 7 people live with a mental health condition, and many still lack timely access to care. At IHH, we’re committed to bridging this gap. Through our investment in Intellect, we offer a range of digital mental health solutions alongside the essential in-person care provided by our dedicated professionals. This approach not only supports our patients but also empowers our people, as we equip them via the Intellect app to prioritise their mental health – because they are the foundation of everything we do. During the session, I was asked what the future of digital mental health should look like. My hope is for an integrated ecosystem where digital tools complement traditional care; offering safe, evidence-based solutions that seamlessly connect patients with in-person treatments.
