If you invest in a search fund, do you also have to participate in the acquisition? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲? Short answer: No, and you can get your money back! Long answer: Imagine an entrepreneur with 15 investors who each contribute $30k to support their search fund. The total budget of $450k covers all expenses, including salary, travel, and due diligence over the typical two-year search. Once the entrepreneur has identified a target company, his initial investors have the option but not an obligation to invest in the acquisition. Let’s say the company requires $15M in equity. Each investor, who holds one unit from fifteen during the search, has the right to invest up to $1M in the acquisition. As Jan Simon wisely states, this is a right, not an obligation. Investors can choose to contribute anywhere from $300k to the full $1M, based on their preference. If an investor decides not to participate, they can either reclaim their initial $30k with a 50% step-up (totaling $45k) or convert that amount into equity. The ability to get your money back is one of the reasons that make this asset class incredibly safe for investors. Although to be frank, the money we put in the search phase is the least of our worries. The risk is in the actually investment. 300 invention filings, 40 patents, 24 spinouts, and 140 licenses per year—𝘿𝙚𝙣𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠’𝙨 startup ecosystem is thriving like never before. Denmark is one of the most digitized countries in Europe, the 3rd most innovative EU member state according to the European Commission, and it placed 10th in the Global Innovation Index 2022. Over the past 12 months, 83.9% of the Danish population used e-ID, known as MitID, to access public services, while the EU average is only 36.1%. Here is an overview of some impactful initiatives 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: The Danish government launched a ‘Digital Growth Strategy’ in 2018, which consists of 38 initiatives and allocated €134 million from 2018-2025 and €10 million onwards per year. 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: The Novo Nordisk Foundation has allocated DKK 1.5 billion to develop a quantum computer in Denmark by 2034​.   𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗯 - 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺: BII's Deep Tech Lab - Quantum, supported by private foundations like the Novo Nordisk Foundation, is making strides in quantum technology and life science​. APEX Ventures has been invited to join the advisory group. Running a startup is hard, here is why and what to do about it. Your TODO list never stops growing - and you will NEVER get it down to zero. No matter how many hours you push, or how hard you try. There are always one more thing to do. Another email you could write, another feature to build, or another customer to get. Thus, knowing how to deal with the pressure is key. Here are 7 ways I wind down - and deal with the rollercoaster of running a startup: ✅ Always get 8 hours of sleep and aim for > 80 sleep score (I use Garmin for sleep tracking) ✅ Learn to not feel guilty when you don’t work - take a night off, have dinner with friends, etc. ✅ Do activities that detach from work completely - triathlon and reading books are my go-to's. ✅ Work out x3 times a week and aim for VO2Max > 55 - healthy body → healthy mind - there are few problems that won't feel easier after a run. ✅ Build value outside of work - joining some occasional competitions in triathlon helps me build value outside of my startup. ✅ Regular sauna + daily cold plunge - the lazy version of working out. ✅ Spend time outside - hike in the forest, get out on the water, run to work. What’s distinct about the company and the AI revolution it’s leading is that OpenAI is not working in opposition to incumbents but rather as a partner to tech giants and other large corporations. It’s serving as an ally to help navigate and implement unprecedented changes, with new tools that can be customized for consumers and enterprise data sets. OpenAI is not unique, but rather, represents a generation of AI startups that are aligned with the giants because of the compute power, and the massive funding, required to accelerate artificial intelligence learning. In fact, 34 of this year’s Disruptor 50 companies describe AI as critically important to more than half of their revenue. Thirteen say that it is generative AI, specifically, that is critically important to the majority of sales."

What happens when self-funded startups compete against venture-driven startups? In the current financial market, I increasingly meet founders stating: “We don’t want to raise capital. We want to be self-funded!” This is a great development. External funding is not the only way to grow your company. I’ve been in this exact situation with one of my former startups. We didn’t want to do the funding show. We made money and wanted to grow slowly and steadily. But then came a competitor. They raised big amounts of capital and changed the rules of the market. In general, this is what can happen: 💰 Price Wars: Competitors with deep pockets can afford to undercut prices significantly. They are basically buying logos and taking market shares. 📣 Marketing Muscle: Funded competitors can invest heavily in marketing and sales. This increases their brand awareness, sales dialogues, and can saturate the market quickly. 🚀 Innovation Disparity: Startups with external funding can allocate significant resources to research and development, driving innovation at a faster pace. The above is primarily true if your competitors have a similar product to yours and you are selling to the same clients. You can try to differentiate your company from others. We tried. It failed, and we ended up being forced to raise capital – it eventually became a race towards the biggest investor tickets. What are your thoughts on this? Like many players, it has evolved from autonomous robots to a trailer put behind a tractor. 🇩🇰 🚜 FarmDroid, a Danish startup, raised €10.5M for its solar-powered weeding robots. 🇬🇧 🧫 MicroLub, a US startup, raised £3.5M to commercialise its fat-replacement technology for plant-based foods. 🇫🇷 🍺 Hubcycle, a French startup, raised €15M for its upcycling marketplace companies with food byproducts with those that can create value out of it. A founder with a previous exit is raising a pre-seed round from angels for his new venture. He is not participating. Two things come to my mind: A) The exit was not a real exit, little or no cash. So why talk about it? B) He does not fully believe in what he is doing and wants to derisk. It somehow created a bad feeling. Putting my own money in as an exited founder is a massive signal for me. Seeing the Forest and the Trees Do we have a big picture of what we wish to do? Do we understand the tasks / goals to fulfil the big picture? Examples Angel Investor: Focus on long-term potential rather than short-term returns. Venture Capitalist: Evaluate the market opportunity before diving into specific financials. Private Equity: Assess the overall growth strategy, not just cost-cutting measures. Startup Founder: Keep the vision in sight while handling daily operations. Student: Understand the course's objectives, not just individual assignments. Professor: Balance teaching duties with research goals. Researcher: Consider the broader implications of your findings, beyond the data. Fresher: Learn company culture and goals in addition to your immediate tasks. Professional: Align your projects with the organization’s strategic goals.

Have a defined horizon & create a clear plan. Have some urgency to get things done at some point. Execute very transparently and reliably. 2/ Stick to your narrative. But don't do it blindly. Tweak it when necessary. Adapt it. Don't let yourself be surprised by major changes. Keep focusing on delivering according to your strategy & plan. 3/ Fundraising is a marathon with many sprints. There are moments when you'll ask yourself - Why do I do this? Is it gonna work out? But don't get too negative during the down phases. Adapting and pivoting is part of our job.
