San José de las Lajas is a municipality an the caipital ceety o the newly formit Mayabeque Province o Cuba, Efter the segmentation o La Habana Province in 2011. It is locatit in the centre north o the province, an is bisectit bi the Carretera Central.

It wis foondit in 1778.[1]

In 2004, the municipality o San José de las Lajas haed a population o 69,375. The ceety proper haes 37,000 indwallers.[3] Wi a tot aurie o 591 km2 (228 sq mi),[2] it haes a population densitie o 117.4/km2 (304/sq mi).

The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Jamaica, Liberación, Tapaste, Pedro Pi, El Perú, Valle del Perú, Morales, Ganuza, Zaragoza, Nazareno, Comunidad Nazareno, El Volcán, La Ruda, Managuaco an San Antonio de las Vegas .[1]

San José is the maist important economical hub o Mayabeque Province wi important industries (metallurgic, mechanical, electrical, biggin materials, chemical, rum) an a well-developit fermin sector.

This municipality hosts the Agrarian Varsity o Havana as well as important kintra level scienteefic institutions o the agricultural sciences: CENSA (Naitional Center o Ainimal Healcare), ICA (Institute o Ainimal Science) an INCA (Naitional Institute o Agricultural Sciences), formin thegither the core o the sae namit "Havana East Scientific Pole"

The basebaw stadium "Nelson Fernández" is the venue o the La Habana basebaw team (Vaqueros) which wis the naitional champion in the 2008-2009 campaign.
