Efter studyin law, Butler turned tae actin in the mid-1990s wi smaw roles in productions sic as Mrs Brown (1997), the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), an Tale of the Mummy (1998). In 2000, he starned as Dracula in the horror film Dracula 2000 wi Christopher Plummer an Jonny Lee Miller. The follaein year, he played Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila (2001).
In the 2000s, Butler co-starned in the films Reign of Fire wi Christian Bale (2002), an Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life wi Angelina Jolie (2003), afore playin André Marek in the adaptation o Michael Crichton's science feection adventur Timeline (2003). He then wis cast as the role o Erik, The Phantom in Joel Schumacher's 2004 film adaptation o the muisical The Phantom of the Opera alangside Emmy Rossum. In 2009, he starned in several films includin the romantic comedy The Ugly Truth wi Katherine Heigl an the thriller Law Abiding Citizen wi Jamie Foxx.
In the 2010s, he vyced the role o Stoick the Vast in the animatit action-fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon, a role he later reprised in Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon (2010), Gift of the Night Fury (2011) an How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014). He played militar leader Tullus Aufidius in the 2011 film Coriolanus, the modrenised adaptation o Shakespeare's tragedy o the same name. He an aa played Sam Childers in the 2011 action biopic Machine Gun Preacher. In 2012, he co-starned in the biographical drama surf film Chasing Mavericks wi Jonny Weston, an the romantic comedy film Playing for Keeps wi Jessica Biel. A year later, he starned as Mike Banning in the action thriller film Olympus Has Fallen opposite Morgan Freeman. He haed a smaw pairt in the 2014 film 300: Rise of an Empire whaur he reprised his role as Keeng Leonidas in flashback.
