Ricardo Amils, Emeritus Professor of Microbiology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and Senior Scientist at the Centro de Astrobiología. Education: BA in Chemistry (Barcelona, 1965–1970), PhD in Science (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, 1973), Research: Associate Researcher at Darmouth Medical School (1973–1975, New Hampshire, USA) and Columbia University (1975-1977, New York, USA). Associate Professor (1977–1993) and Full Professor of Microbiology at the Molecular Biology Department (UAM, 1994–2019). Emeritus Professor (UAM, since 2019). Research focused on extremophilic microorganisms and their biotecnological applications. Memberships and Awards: Member of the Academia Europeae (since 2016). Co-editor of the Enciclopedia of Astrobiology. Member of the American Microbiology Society (AMS), Sociedad Española de Microbiología (SEM), Society for the Study of Origin of Life (ISSOL), European Astrobiological Society (EANA), European Geological Union (EGU), Member of the Sigma Xi Society (since 2002).
