Athanasios Tsakris is currently a Professor and the Head of the Department of Microbiology at the Medical School of the University of Athens, Greece. He graduated as an MD from the Medical School of the University of Athens and completed his training in medical microbiology in London, UK, at the North Middlesex Hospital and the Central Public Health Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is a Fellow in Medical Microbiology and Virology at the Royal College of Pathologists (London, UK). He has served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in the Division of Infectious Diseases (Boston, MA). Dr. Tsakris is also a member of the European Committee on Infection Control (EUCIC) advisory board and previously served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Βoard (SAB) to the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) in the European Union.
