In mobile cellular networks, limiting handover dropping probability within a prespecified target value is a very important quality of service issue because mobile hosts should be able to maintain ongoing sessions even during their handover from one cell to another. We propose and evaluate a simple distributed adaptive bandwidth reservation scheme and a connection admission test for multimedia mobile cellular networks that limit handover dropping probability to a prespecified target value. The proposed bandwidth reservation scheme depends on the number of handover successes and failures to control adaptively reserved bandwidth for handover, and the admission test is designed to reduce traffic overhead between cells. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme to show that it meets our design goal and outperforms the static reservation scheme under various scenarios.
