The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated brain tumor classification guidelines in 2021, which built upon the traditional histologic classification system that has defined brain tumor staging. A number of guidelines have since been constructed around the new classification system, which has enabled even more precise staging and nomenclature for a variety of brain cancers, especially for gliomas. Although the WHO notes that this update is merely an intermediate step toward an even more comprehensive understanding of brain malignancies as research continues to develop, staying on top of the most recent classification system will empower clinicians to take advantage of the latest research in brain cancer management.
