AFC East

A American Football Conference Eastern Division, ou AFC

East (em português, Divisão Leste da Conferência Americana de
Futebol Americano ou AFC Leste), é uma divisão da American Football
Conference (AFC), da National Football League (NFL). Ela possui
atualmente quatro membros: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England
Patriots e New York Jets. A divisão foi criada em 1960, na extinta American
Football League (AFL), em 1960, como AFL Eastern Division. Desde a
criação da divisão em 1960, a mesma já foi representada 19 vezes no
Super Bowl conquistando a vitória em 8 oportunidades, sendo a última no
Super Bowl LI, conquistado pelos Patriots.

Em 2012, os Patriots ultrapassaram os Dolphins e se tornaram a franquia

com maior número de títulos da divisão. Com os consequentes títulos nas
temporadas 2013, 2014, 2015 e 2016 os Patriots alcançaram 19 títulos de
divisão (contando AFL Eastern Division e AFC East) contra 14 dos
Dolphins. Os Bills venceram o título de divisão 10 vezes e os Jets, 4.

Duas franquias que não fazem parte mais da divisão conquistaram títulos
da AFL Eastern Division/AFC East: Houston Oilers venceu quatro vezes (e
em 1960 e 1961 venceu o título da AFL[1]) e o Baltimore Colts (atual
Indianapolis Colts) venceu 6 títulos de divisão e o Super Bowl V, nas 32
temporadas em que fez parte da divisão[2].

História

A divisão teve a sua origem na extinta American Football League (AFL), em

1960, como AFL Eastern Division, na qual faziam parte o Boston Patriots
(atual New England Patriots), Buffalo Bills, New York Titans (atual New
York Jets) e Houston Oilers (atual Tennessee Titans). A partir de 1966, o
Miami Dolphins se tornou membro da divisão. Após a Fusão AFL-NFL em
1970, a divisão manteve-se praticamente inalterada, havendo a inclusão
do Baltimore Colts (atual Indianapolis Colts). No entanto, o Houston Oilers
foi realocado para a AFC Central. Mesmo depois de se mudarem para
Indianápolis em 1984, os Colts permaneceram na AFC East até o
realinhamento realizado na temporada de 2002, quando foram realocados
para a AFC South.

Apesar de a cidade de Miami estar mais ao sul dos Estados Unidos e

distante das outras três cidades, localizadas no nordeste do país, que
sediam os outros três times da divisão, todas as quatro franquias da
divisão têm uma grande rivalidade história entre si, desde os primeiros
anos de disputa, ainda na AFL, nos anos 1960.

Por ter sido criada em 1960, a AFC East é, junto com a AFC West, a divisão
mais antiga da NFL.

Uma ligação em comum entre todas as franquias da divisão é que cada

uma delas é ou foi treinada por um alguém que já teve relação com Bill
Parcells, ex-técnico, introduzido ao Hall da Fama em 2013, seja
trabalhando diretamente com ele, ou trabalhando com algum ex-
assistente de Parcells: os Patriots têm Bill Belichick; os Dolphins tiveram
Tony Sparano; os Jets Eric Mangini, que atuou como assistente de Parcells
e de Belichick; os Bills tiveram Dick Jauron, que atuou como assistente de
Tom Coughlin, que foi assistente de Parcells. O próprio Parcells chegou a
treinar os Patriots (entre 1993 e 1996) e os Jets (entre 1997 e 1999) e foi
vice-presidente de operações dos Dolphins durante o verão de 2010.

temporada regular para apenas 9 jogos. Com isso, a liga fez uso de um
torneio de oitavas-de-final especialmente para esse ano. Para efeito de
classificação as divisões foram ignoradas, com os Dolphins tendo a
melhor campanha entre as equipes da divisão.
