Write the question number properly.
1. If the gain of the proportional controller is made large then it will act as
____________ Controller.
2. Being used for ON-OFF controller with neutral zone applications, IC LM 339 is
preferable than Schmitt trigger under what condition?
3. Comparator suffers from the problem of ____________ and can be corrected by
adding ___________.
4. When Ki increases the overshoot ______________.
5. Define dead time. A system has a time constant of 5 seconds, static sensitivity as 10
and dead time of 0.5 seconds, write the process transfer function.
6. Driving a car can it be best described as a servo mechanism or a process control
system? why?
7. For the error shown in fig. a show how the derivative action changes the controller
output for various rate of changes of error in fig. b. Assume the controller output with
no error or rate of change of error as 50%.
8. For the transfer function H(s) = 1/[s 2 +s+1], which of the following is the
corresponding step response. Explain your choice and why you rejected the other two
possibilities
9. A P- Controller is used to control the temperature in a tank which varies from 20° C
to 100° C. The controller is required to close the steam valve on steam supply (which
is normally open) when temperature rises to 80 °C and open the valve when
temperature drops to 20 °C. Set point is 60 °C. Calculate the PB, Kp and the
controller output when temperature is 50°C.
10. The level in a tank responds as a first order system with changes in the inlet flow.
Given the following level vs. time data that was gathered after the inlet flow was
increased quickly from 1.5 gal/min to 4.8 gal/min, determine the transfer function that
relates the height in the tank to the inlet flow.

11. For the process control system shown in Fig. below, suppose the relays close at ±1.5
V and open at ±1.1 V, the gain of the amplifier is 10, reference voltage is 3 V and
the sensor output is 150 mV/°C. find the temperatures at which the heater turns ON
and OFF and the cooler turns ON and OFF. Assume the diodes are ideal diodes.
12. Draw the block diagram of the closed loop process control system showing all the
blocks and variables. Briefly explain the variables and components involved.
13. Two first order processes with time constants 10s and 25s and gains 1.3 and 1 are in
series. Determine the gain Kp of the proportional controller which would ensure a
decay ratio of 0.5 in the closed loop response.
14. Consider the following liquid storage tank with a cross-sectional area of 3 ft 2.The
valve characteristics is given by . Show that the linearized process has a first
order characteristic. Calculate the time constant of the system at an operating level of
9 ft.
