In a brave and rare move the Mayor of the Portuguese city #Coimbra, has published his payslip on his facebook page. In the post he also clarifies that in #Portugal the income of a City Mayor is linked to the number of citizens of the Municipality (roughly 141 thousand citizens according to the 2021 census). The payslip shows that the annual base salary is approximately 54,500€ and then there is also a meal allowance of 6€ / work day and "representation expenses". It shows a net pay of ~3,000€ but this would be in fact less than 2,200€ without the "representation expenses". To put things in perspective, it is important to mention that the annual minimum national salary in Portugal is of 11,480€ and the annual average gross income is 22,960€. Considering the all the responsibilities of his role (including managing a budget of over 200M€ / year), what do you think about his pay? Caminho Português A few business lessons learned from the Caminho Português, a pilgrimage which we I have accomplished with my partner last Friday, and which inluded hiking of 306 km (and multiple altitude meters, sometimes along old roman roads) along the coast from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain in 14 days. First of all preparation and planning is everything. We had good hiking boots, almost proper equipment for the unexpected, sometimes very rainy weather, and our plan had included some time buffer, and we had to use 1 of the 4 buffer days we had. As always, good project management starts with planning and every project plan needs some time buffer. It pays off! Second, even if the goal is far away, namely to make it to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, always keep your goal in mind and with every little step, day by day, you come closer to your goal. Meaning defining a clear goal can carry you through sometimes stormy weather, difficult to walk paths heat and rain. Or in business terms, have resilience, expect risks and obstacles on your way and let your goal guide you, and as long as you keep making progress it will take you closer to your goal. Third, make breaks, give your body and soul the energy it needs, as early as posssible. If you walk too far, and you run on your reserve for too long, the path can be very challenging and exhausting. Or in business terms, sometimes have a good weekend break or vacation to refresh your mind. Fourth, build in something you enjoy, it can be good food or a nice hotel. It keeps up the motivation to keep on walking. Meaning, celebrate successes with your team along the way. Last but not least, have a good partner by your side (so select your team well) whom you can trust, and who can support and motivate you.
