Charlotte is kidnapped and sold to the French nuns in Tientsin. Her amah, Doh-Tzi, rescues her during the Tientsin Massacre and takes her to her brother Ling Fang, a former Ming prince who is now a notorious pirate. Having no use for females aboard his ship, Ling Fang raises Charlotte as a boy named Shar-Li. When she turns 21, Ling Fang and Doh-Tzi tell Shar-Li the truth about her parents' murder and send her back to Shanghai as a woman to exact her revenge. See less
