The special was generated by the national coverage of and interest in the University of Colorado Trivia Bowl, which drew contestants from around the Country. The Trivia Bowl became the most popular non-athletic contest held on the Boulder campus. The inaugural CU Trivia Bowl was in 1968, the brainchild of David Bowen, Professor of Marketing. Bowen loved information about all aspects of American popular culture, and realized that a Trivia Bowl would generate widespread interest with team competition, featuring such topics as movies, television, old radio programs, sports, music, advertising slogans, and pop lit (such as comics, comic books, nursery rhymes, and beloved children's stories). Richard Dawson served as host of The World Championship of Trivia, while Buster Crabbe and The Shirelles were the featured guest stars. Dr. Bowen served as Quizmaster for this ABC Special. Written by
