At his sister's engagement banquet he receives a blackmailing letter from a money-lender. He is excused by the guests, but not without his sister being aware that he is in trouble. Browning leaves hurriedly to compromise with the Shylock and is followed by his sister. Her prospective husband, Paul Pritchard, sees her leaving the house and follows. The money-lender has a note of Browning's and by the latter's attempt to take it by force, a revolver is accidentally discharged and the money-lender wounded. At the sound of the shot Browning makes his escape; his sister flees, but a locket is torn from her throat and falls to the floor, and Paul forces an entrance to find himself standing over the unconscious form of the money-lender. The police find the dying man, the locket, and Paul, and the latter, to save the name of his sweetheart, declares himself guilty. The brave sacrifice has a far-reaching effect, for not only does it prove to Miss Browning the depth of Paul's love for her, but it frees him eventually and reforms the prodigal brother.
