She rejects the proposal of Philip Craxton, a young settlement worker, because she considers him beneath her station. Kenneth Brooks, her uncle, is interested in Philip, and takes Dorothy to Philip's refuge in the slums to show her the good work that is being done, but Dorothy remains unconvinced of Philip's worth as a suitor. She has an unpleasant experience at the Refuge with Mary, a girl of the streets, who bitterly censures her for her unsympathetic attitude. The doors of Dorothy's home are opened wide to Alan Dart, a young society man, who knew Mary in her better days, and is the father of her child. Dorothy accepts his proposal, as he is of her station. The wedding day comes. Mary reads the announcement, and, fired by the injustice of it all, breaks up the wedding at the church. Dorothy is led away, and at home, her troubled mind conjures up symbolic visions of the levels of life. She sees herself garbed in the white robes of virtue, walking on the heights, and casting a deaf ear to the cries of the unfortunate souls below her level. Then comes a vision of what true humanity stands for. Philip is helping the unfortunates to rise, and she, moved by a more kindly spirit, descends to do likewise. When Alan calls at the Brooks home the next day, and explains that he couldn't marry Mary and sink to her level. Dorothy tells him that he might have tried to raise her to his level. Alan, chastened in spirit, determines to do the right thing, Dorothy, casting pride aside, gives Philip another answer. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
