When the father has obtained his end of the bargain he only laughs at Butler when he would secure his prize. Storey has been clever enough to have Butler's signature affixed to the documents, so that he holds the whip hand and Butler is powerless. Mabel is affianced to Henry Payne, a society idler, who is ever on the lookout for the unusual. So it is that for the announcement party he persuades the old professor, an anthropologist, to allow him to take Lone Eagle, an Indian. Lone Eagle is the last of his race, and the professor and his daughter, Lucy, are endeavoring to "civilize" him. Lucy, out West, had pleaded with Lone Eagle to save her father's life after he had killed two other men, and the Indian is in love with her. At her suggestion he accepts Payne's invitation and dons, for the first time, a dress suit. He attends the party, where he is made the laughingstock of the guests. Lone Eagle realizes that something is wrong and returns home. The professor, angered at his rudeness to the host, insists that he return and apologize. The Indian refuses. In the meantime, he learns many of the ways of the "civilized" people. By chance he prevents the elopement of his host's youngest daughter with a designing baron, secures the signed papers which Butler has hired two men to steal from Storey's safe, and inadvertently learns of the operations of Butler and Storey. He then decides that he has had enough of "civilization" and asks Lucy to share his life and fortune, but she firmly tells him that it is not good for the races to mix, and so he returns to the tribe alone, the last of his race.
