But Josiah Craddock knows nothing good of Petherick, and has warned his daughter against this man. Therefore he turns a deaf ear to her pleading and bids her go; she has made her bed and now must lie upon it. John Drummond, his former clerk, is with him at the time of the interview, which takes place in the grounds of the Craddock home. He is in love with Mildred, twin sister of Alice, but she does not favor him. Seeing her alone, Drummond renews his advances and, in an outburst of passion, takes advantage of their isolation to seize and kiss her. William Linden, Mildred's fiancé, comes on the scene and knocks the dastard down. Drummond is restrained from attacking him by the arrival of Craddock. But he vows that "he will get even with Linden, blow for blow." Some time after his marriage to Mildred, Linden goes abroad on business. Drummond prowling about the house, comes upon Mildred alone in the grounds and pursues her to the edge of a cliff, where, rather than fall into his hand she commits suicide by jumping. The butler witnesses her death, but keeps silent for fear that a family scandal may come of it. In course of time Linden marries again. His friend, Doctor Grace is a philanthropist. In the course of his visits to the slums, Grace meets Alice Petherick, whose husband is now a worthless loafer, and helps her. Drummond meets Petherick in a saloon, and learning where Alice is, plans to deal Linden another blow. He tells Alice that Mildred was poisoned by Linden, who had fallen in love with the woman he afterward married. Desiring vengeance for her sister, Alice, whom Linden has never seen, falls in with his plan, which is to pretend that she is Mildred. But the old butler, recognizing Drummond. Comes forward, and on his story Drummond is arrested. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
