Quick recommendations for which RNGs to use ***************************************************************************** The following RNGs have the broadest appeal among normal users: hc256 HC-256 is the highest quality recommended RNG and the most cryptographically secure. Its biggest drawback is slow seeding time. It's also a little slow and a bit large, but not so much of either of those as to hinder usability for typical purposes. sfc64 / sfc32 / sfc16 The sfc* RNGs are the fastest of the recommended RNGs and one of the smallest. The 32 and 64 bit variants have no known drawbacks, though the 16 bit variant is considered inadequate for parallel uses. chacha Chacha offers cryptographic security, fast random access, fast seeding, and easily adjustable security vs speed tradeoffs. Unfortunately while seeding and random access are fast, generating random numbers with it at any particular setting ends up being slow relative to other RNGs of comparable security and quality, at least with the PractRand implementation (which currently lacks the SIMD optimizations necesary for high-speed implementations of ChaCha). efiix64x384 / efiix32x384 / efiix16x384 / efiix8x384 The fastest recommended RNG that qualified for a "future-proof" five star quality rating. Also the fastest RNG to offer any degree of cryptographic security. Unfortunately its security rating suffers from insufficient analysis. Also, it's a bit slow to seed, particularly on platforms that are not 64 bit. ***************************************************************************** 2. Quick comparison charts for recommended RNGs ***************************************************************************** This section contains lists of RNG algorithms and variants included in the PractRand library, rated from 0 to 5 stars on each of several broad criteria. Each list is restricted to RNGs recommended for a particular purpose; some RNGs thus appear on multiple lists. You can find descriptions of the categories that they are rated on in section 3, and descriptions of the individual RNGs in section 4. In addition to the things which recommended RNGs are rated on, every recommended RNG meets a few common requirements: deterministic endian-safe (when used correctly) excellent performance on statistical tests (exception: mt19937) fast enough for most purposes (exception: sha2_based_pool) supports serialization internally uses only integer math (not floating point) natively operates on 8, 16, 32, or 64 bit integers natively outputs an integer of the same size it operates on internally supports seeding from a 64 bit integer * The following RNGs are recommended for normal use on 64 bit CPUs. If multiplication is very costly: No problem; most of the current recommended RNGs do not use multiplication. The exceptions are: xsm32 uses multiplication xsm64 uses multiplication mt19937 uses multiplication, but only during seeding 2. If you can not use floating point math: No problem; none of the current recommended RNGs use floats. 3. If memory is a major constraint: No problem, just look at the "size" column on the above charts. In particular sfc, jsf, xsm, arbee, trivium, and chacha are reasonably small for their quality and feature set. 4. If you can not do integer math except by emulating it on floating point: That's a problem. All of the PractRand RNGs will tend to be slow on your hardware. 5. If barrel shifts are not efficient on your hardware: Not a big problem. Even hardware that lacks native barrel shifts can generally emulate them at reasonable speeds. If for some reason you want to avoid all use of barrel shifts anyway, some PractRand recommended RNGs that avoid barrel shifts include isaac32x256, isaac64x256, mt19937, and Trivium. 6. If integer sizes on your hardware not 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits: That's a problem. Some of the recommended RNG algorithms could still be efficient, but they might require a customized implementation to optimize for your specific architecture. 7. If you need to minimize the number of transistors required to implement the RNG in hardware: Trivium, sfc*, and jsf* can all be implemented with very little hardware. Of those, Trivium offers the highest quality and is the only one of those to offer any degree of cryptographic security. Have some other limitation? Let me know about it! The following RNG algorithms are frozen - they will produce the same results when used in the same way in all future versions, unless bugs are discovered: jsf64 jsf32 isaac32x256 (aka "ISAAC") isaac64x256 (aka "64 bit ISAAC") mt19937 (aka "The Mersenne Twister") hc256 (aka "HC-256") trivium chacha (aka ChaCha) (for even numbers of rounds only) salsa (aka Salsa20) (for even numbers of rounds only) Other recommended RNGs in PractRand may vary from version to version, though they should stabilize by the time PractRand approaches version 1.0. ***************************************************************************** 3. Also, the general compound nature makes it underperform in some environments that standard testing will not detect; the large statespace of the MWC component reduces but does not fix this problem. speed: (rated from 0 to 5 stars) Broadly: 0 stars - very slow - too slow for normal use 1 star - slow - fast enough for normal use, but only barely 2 stars - medium-slow 3 stars - medium-fast 4 stars - fast 5 stars - very fast Speed is in arbitrary units. It's a bit subjective since actual speed will vary with the circumstances in complex ways. Typically a 1 star difference in speed ratings corresponds to about a 30% difference in performance. Also take note of the output size - if an RNG outputs more bits per call then fewer calls will be necessary for many purposes. Also take note of the word size - if an RNG is run on a computer with general purpose registers of a different size than its word size then it may run slower than expected. theory: (rated from 0 to 5 stars) This rating corresponds to how much the RNG or the math it uses has been studied, how well its properties are known. An RNG with zero stars in this area has no academic papers published about it, an unknown number of cycles, and an unknown shortest cycle length (though predictions are made about the average cycle length of such RNGs and the probability of finding a short cycle by accident, and such predictions are generally accurate). An RNG with 5 stars in this category has numerous academic papers published about it, fully known cycle lengths, etc. Intermediate numbers of stars generally represent intermediate amounts of understanding and attention from academics. Broadly: 0 stars - everything known about the RNG was determined empirically or by gut instinct 1 star - some property of the RNG is provable, and/or at least one paper about the RNG or a closely related RNG has been published ... 5 stars - numerous flaws of the RNG are thoroughly documented (generally not possible for high quality RNGs) size: (in bytes) This is the size in bytes of the RNG implementation. Generally a larger number means that the RNG has a better statespace size and cycle length, but is slower to initialize, uses more RAM (though that's usually not significant on desktops), performs worse in rapid context switching, etc. word: (usually either 8, 16, 32, or 64 bit integers) This is the size of integers that the RNG does math on internally. Mostly you don't need to worry about this unless you want to. Broadly an RNG will perform better if its word size is 32 on 32 bit machines, or 64 on 64 bit machines, etc. It is generally also the size of integer that the RNG outputs at once. statespace size This is the number of meaningfully distinct states the RNG can be in. This is closely related to the size of the RNG - RNGs with larger sizes usually have have larger statespaces. Statespace can be an important factor in suitability of an RNG for high end parallel uses. See "quality" above for information on how statespace size is factored in to quality ratings. minimum cycle length (aka period) The shortest cycle the RNG possesses. May be impractical to figure out for chaotic RNGs, in which case it will be listed as 1. RNGs with small minimum cycles lengths may have a risk of producing the same number over and over again if you use the wrong seed on them. In practice this is normally not a significant issue for decent RNGs, either due to the extreme unlikelyhood of picking a bad seed (in some cases it may be computationally infeasible to even find a bad seed deliberately, even with a massive distributed computing project), or due extreme unlikely of a bad seed even existing (it is believed that there are no bad seeds for hc256, even though that can't quite be proven). See "quality" above for information on how minimum cycle length size is factored in to quality ratings. operations used Generally not important for desktops, but some exotic hardware may have a hard time with some types of operations. full word output Means that the number of random bits produced per call to the RNG is equal to the size of integers that the RNG operates on internally. All PractRand recommended RNGs have full word output. buffering Means that the RNG produces multiple words at once internally, and stores them in a buffer until the application wants them. random access Means that the RNG can skip forwards or backwards in its output stream efficiently. entropy pooling Means that the RNG can be progressively seeded using irregular integer sizes, allowing an RNG to be seeded in exotic ways and/or be used as a hash function. crypto security The difficulty a competent attacker would face figuring out the seed or internal state of an RNG from examining its output. Most RNGs have a rating of "none" or 0 stars. The more computation and outputs needed to figure out the internal state, the better. The more people who have analyzed an RNGs security, the better. The more self-evident or provable the security, the better. VERY roughly guidelines: 1 star: analyzed by myself only 2 stars: analyzed by a few probably competent people 3 stars: analyzed by lots and lots and lots of people +1 star: any two of: well respected by reviewers no hint that its security margin might be borderline studied for more than a decade +1 star: security is self-evident / trivially provable multi-cyclic Multicyclic RNGs have statespaces greater than their minimum cycle length. reversible Reversible RNGs have average cycle lengths that are substantial fractions of their state spaces. Irreversible RNGs have average cycle lengths on the rough order of the square root of their state space. For multicyclic RNGs with smaller state spaces (say, less than 2**300), reversibility is a good thing. Past there it is neither good nor bad, though some people like irreversability in crypto RNGs, on the theory that even if the RNG state somehow magically gets compromised, at least the older output might still be secure. Single-cycle irreversible RNGs are very rare and usually a bad idea. ***************************************************************************** 4. Descriptions of recommended RNGs ***************************************************************************** The short version is: sfc16 / sfc32 / sfc64 pros: fast, small cons: none hc256 pros: highest quality, strong cryptographic security cons: large, slow to seed, slow chacha / salsa pros: random access, cryptographic security, high quality, fast seeding cons: slow, particularly if not using a SIMD implementation efiix8x384 / efiix16x384 / efiix32x384 / efiix64x384 pros: high quality, fast for the quality, marginal cryptographic security cons: slow to seed mt19937 pros: well studied, widely used cons: large, slow to seed, poor quality vs speed jsf32 / jsf64 pros: fast, small cons: some bad cycles exist xsm32 / xsm64 pros: random access, small cons: requires fast hardware multiplication (i.e. not for low-end embedded platforms) trivium pros: small, some cryptographic security, extremely simple hardware implementation, high quality cons: slow in software sha2_based_pool pros: high quality, cryptographic security, entropy pooling cons: VERY VERY SLOW arbee pros: small, fast, entropy pooling cons: none isaac32x256 / isaac64x256 pros: some cryptographic security cons: large, slow, a little slow to seed The long version is: small fast RNGs: Small fast RNGs range from 2 to 5 words in size (16 to 40 bytes on 64 bit systems), and tend to be the fastest category of RNGs. jsf32 / jsf64 actual name: unnamed (I called it jsf for Jenkin's Small Fast RNG) This algorithm is included because it is a good small fast chaotic RNG and it is better studied that other small fast chaotic RNGs. This algorithm was written by Bob Jenkins. -- This small fast RNG is what I use as my baseline for the category of small fast RNGs. This small fast RNG has an advantage over most in that a lot of people have looked at it, and many people have tried their own custom unpublished RNG tests on it. The only reason the older salsa version is included at all is because it has the unambiguous license statement and eSTREAM certification - chacha is better in all other ways. SIMD usage. These algorithms are designed for SIMD. They work fine in non-SIMD implementations, but they are significantly faster when using SIMD. My implementation currently does not use SIMD do to inability to guarantee memory alignment properly. -- It looks kinda like a block cypher applied to a counter - the state transition function is trivial, but the output hashing is extremely high quality. The algorithm as defined in the spec has a cycle length of 2*68, which would limit it to a quality rating of 4 under my rating scheme. To allow it to meet my requirements for a 5 star quality rating the implementation included here has an optional tweak allowing the cycle length to be extended to 2**100. It still returns the same values for the first 2**68 calls, but after that instead of starting over at the begining it can allow carries on the stream position to overflow in to one of the constants. This non-standard behavior is disabled by default when seeding with the chacha seeding formats to maximize compatibility with other chacha implementations, but enabled when using PractRand-specific seeding options (like autoseeding) when compatibility should not be an issue. It is included because of its popularity - this RNG is widely used and widely recognized. It also has an unusual combination of reasonably well understood mathematical properties (corresponding to its good "theory" rating) with acceptable speed & statistical properties. So if you want an RNG that has a good theory rating and doesn't compromise speed or statistical properties too much then this is a solid choice. This algorithm has no bad cycles (it is single-cycle), though it does have equivalents - bad regions within its cycle. This is the only recommended single-cycle RNG in PractRand. -- The state transition function is a very low quality large twisted LFSR. The output function is a relatively complex hashing function to mask the flaws of the underlieing twisted LFSR. But for some reason the output hashing function used is also purely linear. In PractRand it fails only the binary matrix rank test. It looks like it really ought to flunk my BCFN test, but it doesn't. Testing suggests that it's ability to pass that test would evaporate if it had a smaller statesize or slightly weaker output hashing, but is passes consistently, even when very very large quantities of output are used. It's test failures suggest that it should be considered low-quality... but the failures seem oddly brittle, with slight meaningless variations causing mt19937 to pass them, so I'm not entirely sure how to treat that. Technically random access is possible for this algorithm, but the cost (in memory & cycles) required is sufficiently painful that it's never done in practice. update: PractRand 0.91 now includes a binary rank test in the core test set. With this change, mt19937 now fails PractRand standard after 256 gigabytes. Oddly enough it doesn't just fail matrix sizes over 19937, it also fails low-bit tests using smaller matrices (12 thousand). Unforuntately, all random access RNGs that I know of suffer from one or more of the following flaws when implemented in software: requiring fast multiplication, being very slow to fast-forward and rewind, producing very low quality output, or being very slow in general. For PractRand, I've selected two: one with the only apparent flaw of requiring fast multiplication, and one with the only flaw being speed issues. xsm32 / xsm64 This RNG was written for and included in PractRand specifically because of the lack of decent random access RNGs (previously PractRand offered LCGs for that purpose). I wrote this algorithm (though svfuerst on usenet comp.lang.asm.x86 was also involved in the design process). So I might be prejudiced. -- The underlieing state transition function is a simple linear 64 bit (for xsm32) or 128 bit (for xsm64) LCG with very poor constants (to maximize speed). The LCG uses a seed-dependent additive constant in order to expand the statespace. The poor quality of the state transition function is made up for by a relatively complex non-linear output function. It *looks* like the state transition function ought to be too poor to be completely fixed by the output function, and like the the statespace expansion trick ought to produce excessively correlated states, but I have not managed to find any such issues in practice. "Non-recommended" / "other" RNGs ***************************************************************************** The recommended RNGs are good for generating random numbers, but are not so good for testing statistical tests on. This is because they are too good - most of them do not fail any statistical tests in any removely practical amount of time (not counting cryptographic-style distinguishing attacks). So, PractRand includes an additional set of RNGs. These are not intended for real-world usage, and are placed in a namespace named "NotRecommended" to make sure that no PractRand user accidentally uses them for anything serious witout realizing that they are not the intended RNGs of PractRand. Their code and headers are in subdirectories of the RNG directories named "other". The quality of the non-recommended RNGs varies widely - some are simply terrible, others are quite decent. These algorithms are not well documented in this package, and their implementations include only the minimum necessary for them to work in the tests. Some of them have brief descriptions included in their header files. They are organized in to 5 categories. All algorithm names are in lower case. B. Hyphens or other special characters in the original names are omitted. C. If C above did not apply and the output function involves discarding bits from a larger word (as in LCGs) then the A_B is postedfixed on to the RNG name, where A is the number of bits of state in the RNG and B is the number of bits of output that the RNG discards down to. example: a 64 bit LCG discarding down to 32 bits becomes lcg64_32 E.
