ICJ announces resignation of Lebanese Judge Nawaf Salam

New York, Jan. 14 (Petra) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced Tuesday that Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the ICJ, has resigned from his position as a member of the Court effective immediately.

Judge Salam’s term as a member and President of the Court was initially set to end on February 5, 2027. However, he was tasked yesterday with forming a new Lebanese government.

According to Article 14 of the ICJ Statute, it is up to the United Nations Security Council to determine the date for the election of his successor, who will be elected by both the General Assembly and the Security Council.

As stipulated by Article 15 of the Statute, the newly elected judge will complete the remainder of Judge Salam’s term as a member of the Court.

Judge Salam joined the ICJ as a member on February 6, 2018, and assumed the presidency on February 6, 2024. Prior to his role at the Court, he served as Lebanon’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York from July 2007 to December 2017.
