Loren R. Spielman
Loren R. Spielman is Assistant Professor of Classical Judaism in the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at Portland State University. His scholarly interests center on the political, social and cultural history of Jews living under Persian, Greek and Roman rule. Professor Spielman is currently working on a book which examines the important role that Jewish attitudes towards Greek and Roman theater, athletic competition, gladiators and other popular entertainments played in the formation of Jewish identity in Roman Palestine.
Professor Spielman received his PhD in Ancient Judaism in 2010 from the Graduate School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He has taught courses on Rabbinic literature, Hebrew Bible, early Biblcial interpretation and the history and popular culture of Jews in the ancient world.
